Vets triumph on Pros Day Last Saturday hosted my Pros day at Orsett.
132 players from all corners of the Club had the chance to play and enjoy the fun out on the course. With flag positions that resembled a crazy golf course at times and other challenges to overcome all the participants threw themselves into the event with relish. If the golf was not brilliant the drinks and food tables on the way round certainly helped.
With the help of Mizunos fitting team hosting a driving challenge and Odyssey putters doing something similar on the putting green, if the members failed to enjoy themselves it was only because they weren`t actually there playing!
Although this was all about the team event can anything eclipse a hole in one on a day like this? To top it all the pervious shot was only 2 inches away and both may have gone in had I not used a training sized hole on the green! Owner of that hole in one was David Wright, who couldn`t have been happier...
"A great day to play in, even better to achieve something like this. The hole was barely 3 inches wide so it shows what a great shot I must of hit!!"David should now get his name up on the Club hole in one board as a memory of the day and forever in the Clubs history.
The winning team was lead home by Vets Captain, Michael Gregory with Brian Foster, Don Green and Colin Meach supporting. One of the team was 87 years old and one clinically blind in one eye (probably the best way to putt on Saturday, what were the rest of you up to?)The Vets built a massive score of 101 points to win by 3 points. Brian couldn`t believe how well Michael played who put it all down to his new clubs and couple of lessons he had with me recently .Of course everyone had to "do their bit" but with the help of 12 points on one hole , it made the difference.
Runners up were Jack Waters, with Dean Parratt, Jason Mynett and Gareth Evans with 98 points thought to be a winning total for quite a while.
3rd Was Billy Docherty, with Club Champion, Dan Vaughan, Tony "Montana" Brown and late stand in, Shaun Mills with 95.
4th place Ronnie Wilkes, Jeff Woolgrove, George Wickens and Peter Allen 94 points on countback from Steve Wilkinson, Dave Hardy, Steve Evans and Rob Percival, who felt the count back should have been decided with a tug of war competition!
Nearest the Flag winners were Mark Oughton, Linda Dinis, Bubby Girt and Dave Wright.
Mizuno winner was Steve Shiner and putting champ was Peter Aves.
Thank you to all who played and looked like you enjoyed yourselves out there. Next year I will have some new challenges lined up, we testing them out already!
"Dayo -Jason Dayo"
Makes a change for yours truly to pick a Major winner this year! Aussie, Jason Day has been close for a few seasons and finally cruised through even against the hottest kid on the planet, new World No 1 Jordan Spieth. Day played awesome all week and really wanted to "put" the record straight after agonisingly missing out at The Open 3 weeks ago.
He immediately dedicated the win to his Coach, Colin Swatton who caddies for him and is his mentor. Day was a bit of a wild child and then his Coach introduced him to golf. So a real success story for the movie makers in the future.
As for Spieth a fantastic Major year, win, win, 4th by a shot, second. He is now World No1 and the only way is up for the Texan. He, like McIlroy, Johnson and Day are the future. With the likes of Justin Thomas, Billy Horschel, Patrick reed, Danny Willet not too far away, the wind of change is happening in the golf world. Tiger, probably and Mickleson definitely are the "old guard". What now for the likes of Scott, Sergio, Bradley and McDowell? Can they solve their issues and still be a force? Who knows but it will be interesting to watch.
Its Captains Day next Sunday, Graham has many things lined up and there are still a few places if you would like to play. It's Sunday 30th August, starting at 7.30 am, with music from 2.30 pm from the Vince Dunn Jazz Band. Call the usual numbers if you would like to play and book your BBQ tickets.
As you read this, Graham and I are competing in the Captain/Professional Challenge event at The Addington, Surrey. Will give you all the details next week.
Many thanks to those who have so far entered our Sun dream team league. If you want to add your team into the League here`s the details Orsett Pro Shop league Pin No. 8433520
The Premier league season is underway apparently. Man United are top of the league, Arsenal lost to West Ham, Mourinho is complaining about his staff and no one wants to go to Spurs. It must be true then.
