English top in Hawaii Tour golf is very much a way of life and an unforgiving one at that. As recently as 2019, Harris English was struggling to return to the PGA Tour, having lost his card and been demoted to the Korn Ferry Tour (this is the feeder tour to the PGA, much like the Challenge Tour in Europe). Now, English is a PGA Tour champion once again. The 31-year-old picked up his first victory since 2013 at the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Hawaii, having fought off Justin Thomas’ pursuit of a third title in five years at the event. What an achievement, and one for the sentimentalists. English used his undoubted talent and maturiity to defeat Joaquin Niemann in a one hole playoff. What a place to get back on track,Hawaii.A little bit of a twist this year as the event was open to more than just the traditional Tour winners of the previous year.English fell into the "others" category and took full advantage of his opportunity. DJ, Bryson ,JT,Rambo were all there playing,I assume the Tour were worried that players just wouldn`t travel due to Covid 19 and the event was getting a little short of quality but they were not quite right on that one.DJ looked like he had picked up from where he left off before Christmas until he lost a ball on the back nine Sunday to halt his momentum.Bryson continued to just plan an all out attack on each tee shot and has no plan to stop that, which is still exciting everytime he pulls the driver out.Rahm opened his season with his big fat Callaway contract sticking out his back pocket and looked like nothing had changed in his game. Some players struggle when shifting manufacturers but he looks as good as ever..JT he got "caught on air" using a term he shoudln`t when missing a short putt and gave a humbling apology immediatley on finishing his third round.Let`s hope that stops there with that. It all augers well for an extremely competitve new season, although skipping around in 24 under par and not winning is no fun. With so many formidable players who can excite and with the return of Rory,Brooks,Tommy,Tyrell and Tiger not too far away, golf will be worth watching as they prepare for the big one in April.Pretty much like Gordon, last years Captain and myself will be doing for the Captain/Pro National Championships around the same time.(it wont get mentioned again, honest) If you have any golf-related questions or enquiries, feel free to get in touch using the button below. |
