Like many of you, avid golf followers may know, arguably the finest ever golf commentator passed away at the weekend. Peter Allis with his eloquent soft voice and expert timing was made for the role as much as his talent to play the game at the highest level. Who didn't grow up listening to the very few events on TV having Mr Allis set the scene, at The Open, The PGA Championship, The World Matchplay, Pro-Celebrity golf ( the only thing worth watching on a Sunday evening) around with Allis and of course late-night drama at The Masters before satellite tv existed?

His ability to understand from the player's position was underrated in the commentary and his turn of phrase is still unrivalled. Here`s just a couple, I can remember, I`m sure you all have favourites.

"Another majestic drive from Weiskopf", "The Spanish Armada" when talking about, Seve, Antonio Garrido, Manuel Pinero and  Jose Maria Canizares".He's going to have to land this softer than a vicars handshake" " it's something like Jurassic Park out there" describing the rough at an Open venue."It's like turning up to hear Pavarotti sing, only to find out he has laryngitis " Reflecting on Tiger Woods third round in the 80s at the 2002 Open. His mention of a golf club anniversary was legendary at the end of each Open and so much more.

An excellent playing record of over thirty wins and Five Order of Merit titles, plus Ryder Cup appearances might have been overshadowed by his infamous three-putt to lose the trophy allowed him to heap praise and criticism on the modern players. Ironically he hated slow play but ended his days working with the "snail of them all" Ken Brown!

Thank you, Mr Allis, you ignited many peoples desire to find out about and play golf.

What great news this week that the first doses of the Pfizer  COVID 19 vaccine have been administered and in good old British manners it was Ladies first, with Margaret Keenan,91 next week, the recipient.
