Over the last week, Orsett has lost two of its most respected members Harold "Bubby" Girt, member for over thirty years lost his battle to cancer. Bubby will be remembered for his home town humour and language mixing it into the conversations he was involved in and talk about his favourite football team, Spurs, he loved them and always had his opinions on today's team and the modern players compared to way back when and no one compared to Glenn Hoddle his favourite player who he had the pleasure of playing golf with last year in the annual Spurs Charity day at Orsett. I`m sure everyone has a "Bubby "story each as entertaining as the next one, which made him so popular in his sweep. His was a legendary caddy for anyone in club matches and would take the time to caddie for those members who went on to play at a higher level and would lighten the atmosphere saying what he thought of some shots ..He always enjoyed the social side which he looked forward to more than his long-suffering golf in the last couple of seasons but continued to look for "the secret" to golf every time he played. David Millane also lost the fight to cancer." DJM", as he was referred to on the media links loved nothing better than giving his time to organise. His skills in this department were second to none. Ryder Cups, overseas pro-ams and members golf trips away, but above all his generosity to any cause behind the scenes of many of the major Orsett events was seen but rarely heard about. An extremely popular person, David had a huge circle of friends in and away from golf, he was just that kind of person, sociable. He enjoyed sport but just loved to play golf. He could converse with anyone on any subject and throw in a bit of quick wit that got missed if you were not on his wavelength, and if you needed a suitable restaurant to visit in London he was your go-to man. Both men are going to be massively missed. Rest In Peace and God Bless you both. |

DJ's Masterclass We finally saw what winning a golfing Major meant to any golf professional Sunday.DJ realised his dream on winning the Masters Green jacket, a boyhood dream of his and perhaps those he had let slip through his fingers that had been kept buried those emotions too all came out at the same time. He literally couldn't speak in his interview on the Augusta putting green such was the overwhelming emotions. Did we think he had that in him? Well now we know, he is human, just a remarkably talented one for the game of golf. What a display, Three days he had a low score or tied, some of the longest drives and nearest to the flag with his second shots on average all week, which in the end showed how important ball control was to just distance. He is a red hot favourite for next years, Masters, already. Everyone who was meant to contend was always in his shadow after the third round. They scored well but DJ just made so few mistakes and in the end, the field could not live with the South Carolina native. For the rest, what a record for Cameron Smith to hold, all four rounds in the 60's but only tied runner up. Sungjae Im, rookie of the year, so cool playing in the last group and had DJ missed and he holed on No 6 it may but only may have been a different story being written. How can I not mention Bernhard Langer? 63 years old, who puts people a lot younger to shame physically and finishing under par for the week.Just an incredible person who just loves to play golf. The rest of the worlds leading players were put in their place. Thomas didn't drive it straight enough, nor did Bryson but was ever going to? Rahm just isn't yet ready to win something this big, it's not far away just not yet. And for all of us willing Rory to win, he admits he plays defensive and guided at the start, words we would be more familiar with and not expect from this talented person. So it happens to us all. They all ended playing catch up but DJ was not going to allow anyone to take that jacket from him. His shot on the 6 th to make a birdie was the settler, as he too admitted to massive nerves starting out. With this added belief from winning his second major, let alone the consistent season he had, he is now well and truly the best in the world no question. The final word goes to Tiger... Even he found that simple little par three 12th, a little tougher than usual, making a Bo Derek! Perhaps his last 6 holes showed why he is the greatest player in modern times, no giving up. |
