There is so much news around Orsett members at the moment. I mentioned, member, Jack Dyer last week only to see him go out of the British Amateur Championship in the last 32. But not to be too deflated the 22-year-old just happened to put the South East England Links Championship trophy on his mantlepiece at the weekend after playing 72 holes on Royal Cinque Ports and Royal St Georges, host to next years Open Championship. Jack opened with a steady 72 at St Georges and followed it with a better round of 70 to be one behind the leader after two rounds. Just one behind him was another Orsett member Zach Chegwidden who was close to winning the Essex Amateur last weekend. With fine weather promised on Saturday,(a Friday start) Jack took the event by the scruff of the neck with a fantastic round of 6 under,65. He moved into a four-shot lead. With all to play for and confidence high, he cruised around in another sparkling 68 to increase his lead and to win by 10 shots. His winning score would have graced any Open played there and could have won many. Zach after a disappointing 77 third round fought back to finish ninth after a last round 72. Just to show what quality golf both boys played Competition scratch scores read as follows to give you a true understanding of the course difficulty. 75,74,74,74. a total of 297. Jack has now reduced his official handicap to PLUS FIVE nearly PLUS SIX. Zach, buoyed with the satisfaction of three out of four good scores, tested his fitness and mental stamina on the Sunday by playing in the Orsett Club Championship. Due to COVID, this years event was only 18 holes which opened the door to so many more players in this format.
We say farewell to a legend... Orsett stalwart and hugely respected member of 41 years, Jeff Woolgrove sadly lost his battle with ill health in the early hours of Tuesday morning past.Jeff was a supporter of everything Orsett from a regular team member of winning Thornton Cup sides,to the role of Club Captain in 2012 where even for his incredible golf he achieved a mind boggling two holes in one in the same round! Talk about make your Captains year memorable! Jeffs smooth rythmn was something to copy, which matched his easy going relaxed nature. With a huge source of golfing knowledge,he loved to talk golf and would advise anyone who asked for his help or opinion and used his sense of humour to poke fun if warranted. He gave so much to the Club, much in the background and wanted nothing return except to enjoy his golf no matter who he played with.It goes without saying he will be so sadly missed by the whole Club..I think I speak for whole Club when I say "It was an honour to have known you Jeff.Rest in Peace Sir". |
The weather again was ideal for scoring and the first player out Scott Davies posted a very good, but disappointing 73. He was, in fact, three under par after nine holes but still produced his best competition round at the Club. This score stood until early afternoon when Carl Vanderhook sneaked past him with a level par 72, In his words "surely an overweight 53-year-old, four handicaps can`t win?"Just after he posted those words on WhatsApp, news came in that there were players with a chance to beat him finishing. But when it all played out the only one who did get past him was Zach with a great score of 69,3 under par. and a deserved win after playing some great golf for three weeks. It always feels better with a "W". Congratulations boys some brilliant scoring and golfing over the last few weeks, Orsett are very proud of you. |

DJ wins big How does a $15 million payday sound to you? For playing golf? Dustin Johnson finally achieved one of the few things missing from his CV on Monday evening when he stepped off the 18th green at East Lake GC. Sadly, there were no fans to cheer him on, but DJ won the TOUR Championship and, as a result, the season-long FedEx Cup - the PGA Tour's order of merit. If ever there was a deserving winner, it’s a man who finished the season T2-1-2-1; a run that started at the PGA Championship. Seeing DJ back to his best makes for beautiful viewing, he`s decisive and plays swiftly.Their is little time for second guessing once he has pulled a club and settled over the ball.If you saw the last round Schuaffle was much more fidgity on the back nine and his routine was taking longer and longer. It allowed a little tension to interfere with his swing and caused the errant shots that cost him the chance to catch DJ. Can you see anyone getting near him for the US Open just around the corner? He has seen them all off and the field now know DJ is back to his very best.Winged Foot needs your very best and with sky high confidence he could win by plenty .If you’d like to give your playing partners some better viewing on the course, why not book in for a lesson with a member of the team? |
