Four decades of victories When it comes to enjoying what you like to do, Lee Westwood must epitomise this as a sportsperson. Westy won the first leg of the Desert swing last week in Abu Dhabi which meant he has now won in 4 decades on the European Tour. The 46 year old has been a model of consistency throughout his career and with the lucrative Champions Tour not too far away the desire to compete still burns bright. Many of us would do well to copy Westwood’s easy-going attitude to the game as he always looks like he is out just enjoying himself. Mind you with over £50 million in the bank and doing a job you love how couldn`t you? His twitter page showed a less than spritely winner the next morning as he put a selfie on it admitting to a "banging headache" perhaps he walked into a door or something as I thought the Middle East was something of a dry state? The event itself had brought together a pretty good field including World No 1 Brooks Koepka who hadn`t played since his knee surgery, played all four days, Mr Muscle, Bryson DeChambeau, who is hitting the ball 30 yards further but obviously not as straight, missed the cut. Interestingly Sergio Garcia looked to have new clubs in the bag and may have pushed Westwood had his new putter been even lukewarm and hot out the blocks was Matt Fitzpatrick, he of the incredibly quick swing but is definitely being talked about as a Major contender. It`s the Dubai Desert Classic this week with an even stronger field and well worth a watch. Look for Victor Hovland, the Norwegian, he will give you a bit of each-way value if you like a flutter. |
