Welcome to another edition of our newsletter, in this week’s mail I share with you the results from my Pro’s Day, there was Thornton Cup misery in the semi-final, and the PGA Tour reaches it’s finale this weekend. Enjoy the read!

Pro’s Day 2019

Last weekend I held my annual Pro’s Day event at Orsett. A total of148 members took part in the fun and games in the shotgun start. All week I`d been on my prayer mat hoping for an improvement in the weather and some divine intervention happened as we got what was asked for!! So in near perfect conditions, the teams made their way around playing from strange tee boxes to even weirder flag locations. There were plenty of food and drink stations located on the course, as well as mini golf and tennis challenges. Some were better than others at both! Sadly no video evidence was taken at the time but stories filtered around the course of 6 inch tee shots, divots over the ball and some even unable to contact the tennis balls with the tennis racquets! How much bigger heads are required people? How much of this was down to the refreshments we will never know, but to say there were some shocking attempts would be polite James, Martin and Jim! Everyone had a great time and eventually the winners were:

Winners - Dan Clark, Robbie Slaughter, Gay Gutteridge & Stuart Ince

Runners up - Pete Dreher, Ma Lewis, Chris Dreher & Grant Allen

3rd - Colin Hodges, Carl Vanderhook, Kevin Ryan & Dave Tong

4th - Russell Fields, Ronnie Wilkes, Steve Pearce & Issa Pooloo

5th - Dave Wright, Jim Carr, Steve Biggin & Bob Hillion (I promise you won’t start on the 17t next year!)

Thornton Cup misery…

Orsett’s Thornton Cup scratch team fell at the semi-final hurdle again this year. For the second year in succession, the men went out of the Counties most prestigious team event, something they had won three times in a row prior these defeats. The team lost to a powerful Chelmsford side who were the holders and now go on to face West Essex in the hope of retaining the trophy in the final. Well done boys a fine attempt, next year let’s go one step further!

Captain’s Day

There are the last few spaces available should any one wish to play. The event is followed by entertainment after the prize giving, so a full days fun and games. Why not come and support your Captain’s last major golfing event of the season?

The FedEx Cup…

The PGA Tour climaxes this week with the Tour Championship event at East Lake in Atlanta. The FedEx lead was turned upside down at the BMW event at Medinah, Europe’s most memorable ever Ryder Cup winning venue. It was renamed from Miracle to Massacre at the weekend as Justin Thomas blitzed the 7,500 yard golf course finishing 25 under par!

When that boy gets going, he goes deep! He has moved himself into the number one spot for the FedEx Cup and with its new format he now gets a head start on the field. The winner incidentally no longer gets 10 million dollars if they win, they receive 15 million dollars! Even 30th place gets a little bit for making it to the Championship ($395,000). As I said, Thomas starts 10 under with second in the race on 8 under par. Rory McIlroy at 5th is 5 under and then 6th-10th is 4 under, 11th-15th is 3 under, 16th-20th is 2 under, 21st-25th is 1 under and the last 5 players are level and start 10 behind Thomas. It will be interesting with this new format but how do you give the player on form a 10 shot lead over 4 days and expect anyone to beat him? It will all be revealed Sunday evening!

So "Little Old" Wales are currently the best Rugby Union team in the world. Finally a bit of karma from the late teams of the 60`s and 70`s when we really were the best but it was never truly recognised as such with no official rankings being available.

Warren Gatland’s men bounced back brilliantly with a comfortable revenge over England in Cardiff last week after the "loosener" at HQ (Twickenham) the week before. With New Zealand thumping Australia to win the Bledisloe Cup again, there really is going to be a bun fight for this year’s Webb Ellis Trophy in Japan next month. Include South Africa and Ireland, possibly the "bad travellers" France who knows who will be drinking from the trophy come November. The start of the tournament on September 20th can`t come soon enough!

Back to basics

There are any number of online tutorials giving you the 'perfect advice' as to how to cure a specific problem you may have with your game. However, the key to solving most issues in sport (golf included) is to go right back to where it all began - the fundamentals.

Check your fundamentals

The way you set-up to the ball writes the script for the swing. This may be one of the more basic elements to the game but yet it is also one of the most overlooked – and that can be dangerous for your scorecard.

Jack Nicklaus once said:

"If you set up correctly, there's a good chance you'll hit a reasonable shot, even if you make a mediocre swing. If you set up to the ball poorly, you'll hit a lousy shot even if you make the greatest swing in the world”

The most beautiful shot in golf

If we were to ask you this question what would you say? We think some of you would say the ‘Tiger stinger’ but a good proportion would say the pitch shot that takes a couple of bounces before stopping to a halt. It looks sensational but how on earth do you play it?
