Welcome to another edition of our newsletter, in this week’s mail we take a look at rookie sensation - Matt Wolff, the Captains Charity day was a huge success, and all eyes are on The Open Championship. Enjoy the read!

Leader of the wolf pack… Rookie sensation Matt Wolff became the newest winner on The PGA Tour last weekend in only his third start as a professional. The collegiate standout matched Bryson DeChambeau’s eagle on the 72nd hole to win by one. At one time 16 people were within one shot of the lead in a birdie fest, perfect for anyone who wants to know why so many people learn to play golf. Apart from the fact it was only his third professional start, anyone who watched must have thought he should be on the local municipal course with that back swing! A quirky movement to instigate the takeaway and then a movement honed from playing baseball that feels natural to him, and also makes Jim Furyk and Shaun Mills backswings look orthodox!
You don`t get into the top 3 amateurs in the world if you can`t play and he certainly can! With today`s technology, it is all about the score and not the perfect action. As he is in his 20s, his wrists and back can hold up to his aggressive swing, but I’m not so sure at 35? Take a look at it and be prepared to be amazed if you are yet to witness his method. It certainly would keep you watching just to believe it really happens! Click here to see Matt Wolff’s golf swing. |

Nearer to home, Jon Rahm found the Irish Open once again to his liking. Rounds of 64 and 62 at the weekend around Lahinch is not easy, even with no wind which is unheard of in County Clare. But he managed it, and stole the event from the under the leaders noses. Paddy Harrington opened with 63 and whipped the massive crowds into huge expectation of an Irish winner. Alas it wasn`t to be and Rahm may have just given himself a bucket load of confidence with The Open a week away. It`s brewing up into what will be a fantastic spectacle, huge galleries, and great course so let’s hope the weather is kind so we can enjoy an amazing event.

Charity begins at home… Captains David Chegwidden and Joyce Barber held their annual Charity Day at the weekend. There were 34 teams playing in fabulous conditions and course was as good as anywhere this time of year. The Alzheimer charity benefited greatly to the amount of £3,500.00 on the day. Men’s Captain David was so busy he forgot his trousers, literally! Winners on the day (other than the charity) were "The invisibles" - Steve Golding’s team which included Kev Lewis, Kev Lazell and team maestro Graham Dunn. Graham excels when he plays this format and can be seen below collecting all the prizes!

Runners up were "Same old faces" George Carroll, Jim Connor, Billy Docherty and Bill Preedy whose round was helped with an eagle 3 on the par 5 11th and followed up with a hole in one on the 12th! Apparently it was a great shot with a 9 iron, what a day to do it! Third place went to "Birdie Machines" Chris Dreher, Pete Dreher, Grant Allen and Mat Lewis. Longest drive (Hole 7) went to Jason Renton and of course Billy won nearest the hole on No 12. The day was followed by dinner and entertainment for a very worthy cause. Congratulations to both Captains and all their helpers for a very successful day. |

Thornton Cup Trophy Orsett cruised into the quarterfinals for the fifth year in a row in the Thornton Cup Trophy Sunday, crushing Epping Golf Club 13.5 to 1.5. They now await the quarterfinal draw but with a stronger squad than ever, they will be looking to wrestle back the trophy they gave up last season in the semi-finals.

All eyes on The Open Championship… We still have a few spots available on our Open Sweepstake. If anyone has yet to pull a ticket out then please do as there are less than 10 to choose from and under a week to get on board. I will be shortly advertising my Pros Day, August 17th is the date! There will be loads of fun, food and prizes as always .Keep an eye out on the notice board for the entry sheet as it fills up quicker than a punctured dingy in 10ft waves! |
Next week will all be about the biggest event of the season, The Open Championship at Royal Portrush. So send us your predications for 1st, 2nd and 3rd and why? Will it be Rory, G-Mac the home town boy, Tiger Woods, Brooks, or some others? Its bubbling up nicely, I can`t wait for it to start! Let me know your predictions here. Last week England once again went out in a semi-final of the World Cup. This time via a missed penalty and to the eventual winners. One day, just one day things may just change! Perhaps the curse of the ball "crossing the line in 1966" is true. Still as I write we have the semi-final of the cricket world cup to gnaw our finger tips through. No Germans or Americans in that, just the Australians so no problem there! At least it all beats Love Island surely??
