Welcome to another edition of our newsletter, in this week’s mail we round-up the recent Threadgill Trophy results which were well represented by the Orsett members, there has been some great recent fittings with the Callaway Epic Flash, and we take a look at Rory’s putting woes. Enjoy the read!

Threadgill Trophy Orsett member Shaun Mills won the Threadgill Trophy held at Orsett last Friday, the trophy is part of The Essex County Order of Merit. Finishing 3 under for the 36 hole event, he felt as though he hadn`t done enough. "With the weather and scores so good in the morning and trailing by 6, I didn`t think shooting a 2 under 70 would be close. Just goes to show that you have to keep trying and find out when everyone completes the task" With other Orsett members and county players in front of him, it was easy to understand the thought process. During the morning round, Orsett member Callum Newton blitzed round in 65 followed by county player Lukas Warren (67), and just behind them was another Orsett member, Dan Vaughan (69). At lunch 21 players were par or better and with no wind, dry fairways and excellent putting surfaces, it was expected that going low was the only way to win. But rain squawls came through and scoring got a little harder and at the close, Shaun prevailed with Dan one behind and Warren a shot further back. |

The best nett score on the day, had there been a prize for it would also have been awarded to an Orsett member. Tommy King took the day off from studying for exams, blistered around the morning front nine in 5 under, finished in 73 and then proceeded to have a 75 in the afternoon for a nett of 138 that included his first ever hole in one. According to witnesses (Tommy and his playing partners) it was the perfect 8 iron fading 2 yards, one bounce to the right and in the hole on the 149 yard 12th. Congratulations to all the winners, some of the golf I saw was pretty spectacular. |

Nothing I like more than a challenge… Like most ladies, length on the golf course is important and Orsett Lady member Linda Cross liked the idea of changing to a new driver. She thought here existing Yonex was ok in her words but did think there must be something better out there? She immediately preferred the look of the Callaway Epic Flash and after trying a couple of shafts and loft changes, we gained Linda 23 yards in total including 18 yards carry. She liked it so much she bought the fairway metal to match! She can`t wait for them to be delivered and to get them in her hands.
Another Orsett member, John Maulkerson, was interested in generating a little more distance from the tee to reduce his club into the green. For those who do not know John, he rarely misses the fairway but anything requiring a decent carry is difficult as he has a low ball flight, perfectly suitable for Orsett’s course conditions many of you might reply. New technology in the shape of a Callaway Epic Flash driver created higher launch angle and ball speed, something John’s driver wasn`t giving him. After some warm ups, he challenged me to a 25 yard increase for an immediate purchase. |
It took just three swings with the Flash to get 80% of the way there and finally with a couple of minor tweaks we reached the golden line and a 34 yards distance increase overall!! Now should you want to possibly benefit from something like that, then please get in touch and let’s see if I can get you over the golden line and as of this weekend we are offering both FREE fitting and a FREE aftersales lesson should you purchase the products! John is regularly hitting mid irons into greens where last month it was fairway metals and hybrids, he could be a good man to get your money on for this weekend’s S-Club 46 tour to France! Can Rory find the solution? Rory McIlroy wasted another opportunity to win on The PGA Tour last weekend. Not the best 30th birthday present for Rors as his flat stick (probably in the 15 acre lake by now) once again failed to perform at Quail Hollow. At one of his favourite tour venues, this must be causing some deeper concerns with golf’s next Major only a couple of weeks away at Bethpage in New York. Of course it isn`t easy to win no matter who you are but the Irishman’s putter is holding him back so much. Yes he won The Players and he has finished inside the top 10 nearly every week he has played. Imagine what sort of year it could be so far if he had putted half decently? I`m one of his biggest fans and enjoy watching him play, yet I` m beginning to expect him to miss as many as he makes at the moment. He will only become the UK’s best ever and overcome Faldo’s records if he can get that putter working again. What do you think he should do about his putting? 1.Change the putter 2.Change his putting grip 3.Get the caddie to read the lines 4.Change his putting coach 5.Change nothing 6. Something else. Southend survive squeaky bum time at Roots Hall... Somehow local side Southend United survived the drop into the 2nd division with a win over Sunderland at the weekend. "The Blues" had been on the slide since late January due to a long injury list and a goal drought, they were dragged into the relegation battle with 5 games to go. It cost manager and Club legend Chris Powell his job unfortunately. At one stage there was only 6 points covering the bottom 13 teams! It came down to 5 sides for three places, all Southend had to do was win. Two things they were not good at, was winning and scoring more than their opponents, and Sunderland had scored in every away fixture this season. Could it have been more exciting? There were two great early chances that fell Southend’s way but were squandered with just the keeper to beat. Then just before half time, defender John White scored with an overhead shot from a corner for the Blues to go in 1-0 up and send the fans wild and ease the undoubted stress. The second half played out mainly in Southend’s end of the pitch and the pressure finally gave way as the hero turned villain John White gave away a penalty. The score now 1-1 with just 3 minutes to go and no likely hood of Southend scoring, other results going against them, a miracle happened as substitute Stephen Humphrys managed to find the net from 8 yards. The biggest crowd of the season went ballistic and the blues held on, stayed up and enjoyed the pitch invasion after the whistle. If any of the play-offs are like that this coming weekend then the games will be very entertaining!
Tiger wins a new medal… Should congratulations go out to a certain Tiger Woods, a good friend and golfing partner of The President, for receiving the USA Medal of Freedom? What was it given for?
Making a significant contribution to the security or national interest of the US, towards world peace, culture or other significant action. I can think of people who might read a completely different description with certain irony into what Tiger Woods has contributed to "The Union" at times.

|
• Step 1 – Let’s talk. We use this time to familiarise ourselves with your golf game, your goals and about your current set of clubs. • Step 2 - You take to the floor. Yes, it's that simple - you hit some golf balls with your own irons so we have a baseline for comparison. • Step 3 - Shaft Optimiser time. We swap your iron for Mizuno's DNA Shaft Optimiser, which has been improved upon for 2019, and three swings later we have your recommendations. • Step 4 - Time to dial in. We'll test the iron model and top three shafts that have been suggested by the Swing DNA software, look at your lie angle and keep going until we get the perfect make-up for your game. • Step 5 - Complete the set. Once we have you matched up to your ideal choice, we'll look at the gapping between your longest iron and shortest wood, as well as your wedges to ensure no stone is left unturned. So, what are you waiting for? Let’s take your iron game to the next level in 2019 with an eye-opening custom fitting with Mizuno at our club. |
