Can he make it a Tiger double? That time of the year has finally come back around, the first men’s major of the year welcomes us back to the hallowed turf of Augusta National. This year marks the 83rd edition of the masters with the 87 man field all battling it out for the coveted green jacket and the cool sum of 1.9 million dollars first prize. This year’s Masters is set to be a cracker with most of the world’s top 10 golfers already having a win to their name already this season. Rory seems to be in the form of his life at the minute, in his last 7 starts the Northern Irishman hasn’t come out of the Top 10 and has a win included in that when he won the Players Championship 3 weeks ago. He is currently the favourite going into this week’s Masters, fingers crossed he doesn’t have a meltdown like he did in 2010 and complete the Grand Slam of majors which he so desperately wants so he can join the illustrious legends of the game that have done so. Justin Rose looks settled with his new golf clubs and has a fantastic record round Augusta finishing 2nd twice, behind Jordan Spieth in 2015 (who also loves Augusta) and we all remember that thrilling encounter between Sergio and Justin in 2017. With the form that all the players are in, the venue being as beautiful as ever, its anyone’s tournament to win, most importantly its which golfer can hold his nerve come Sunday night’s back 9.

Inaugural Augusta National Women’s Amateur 2019 marked the start of the first ever women’s amateur competition where two rounds took place at Champions Retreat and the final round at Augusta National. This was the first time a competitive women’s golf tournament has taken place at Augusta. The event will take place every year just before the men’s professional competition. Just like the professional men, the world’s leading female amateurs had to be invited to the tournament at Augusta National. 72 women played in the competition which was won by the American Jennifer Kupcho who played the back nine in 31 shots finishing on a total -10 for the three round competition winning by four shots. If you offered the male golfers -10 going into the final Sunday of the Masters then they would probably bite your hand off for it.
Tiger Rolled the National... Last Saturday saw the 172nd running of the infamous Grand National which was won by Tiger Roll. Tiger Roll made it back to back National wins by winning by 4 lengths, the last time a horse won the National back to back was the iconic Red Rum some 45 years ago. Tiger Roll winning cost the bookies over £250 Million pounds. Could this be a good omen for Tiger Woods followers at Augusta?

Leslie Wood team... Last week Orsett`s Leslie Wood team travelled away to Crondon Park in the first round, a difficult tie on a long course with little run and unfamiliar greens. A score of 3.5 - 1.5 down at lunch, the team battled back only to see the wrong end of an 8-7 result that went to the last putt on the last green. Team Captain Simon Smith said” We couldn`t have done much more, an awkward 1st round game, not much match play practice and losing as we did was tough to take. Credit to Crondon Park though and onto the plate for us”
Thornton Cup... Also in action were numerous members of the Thornton Cup squad trying to qualify in the first County event of the season, the Keating trophy at Three Rivers. Ten players entered from Orsett, five qualified for the 16 man field knockout and a first reserve, not a bad representation. Josh Tobin was third in qualifying, with low round of the day by Harry Robson. Two members now face each other in the first round with Cassidy Steffens playing Callum Newton. Should be some excellent golf at Three Rivers this weekend if you can drag yourself away from the TV.
Scrutton Cup... This week is the first of the “gold letters” trophies with the members playing for the Scrutton Cup. Tied to this event is the qualifying for the Staysure Regional Event to be held at Orsett in July. The only drawback is the winner must be over 50 years old to represent Orsett in that qualifier. The winner of the regional qualifier goes onto a 2 day all expenses Pro Am at The London Club in August, so well worth taking part in.

A driver is a powerful beast, sometimes too powerful if a hole has a hazard within range. In this scenario, you have a plethero of options to choose from, but there is one that is often overlooked. |
Picture the scene You're stood on a par-4 tee box and there’s a water hazard 240 yards away. What do you do? Many of you will reach for your longest iron on auto-pilot, however a custom-fitted fairway wood might just be the perfect solution; getting you further down the hole and closer to the green. | |
|
Why is this often overlooked? A lot of golfers don't have confidence in hitting their fairway wood because, quite simply, they don't use it enough. But with technology to help you hit them better - such as the Spin Control System in Lynx's Black Cat fairway wood that offers fantastic control and trajectory - it's time you gave them another go. |
Custom fitting is key We're delighted to see so many of you come to us for a custom fit when you're after a new driver or set of irons, but why does it stop there? A custom fitting is so important in ensuring you get the most from any new purchase, whether that's a driver, fairway wood or putter. |
