Radin Cup Qualifier… Billy "Showbiz" Malpas took centre stage in the Radin Cup Qualifier re-run at the weekend with a hole in one at the difficult 182 yard par three 8th hole. It helped him to one of the 31 qualifying places on a total of 1up. The leading score on the day was from the modest Issa Pooloo and Leslie Wood squad member Mark Jennings with 3up. With weather conditions improved from the fog that postponed the original round and the strong winds the week before, the event finally got off the ground. Congratulations Billy, your account is now looking very healthy!

The Player’s Championship… Rory McIlroy kept his cool, stayed patient and showed why, in my opinion, he is best player in the world. He put his critics in their place with a win at The Players Championship last week. Apart from this win, the Irishman has not finished outside of the top six in any event he has played all season. At one stage on Sunday there were 19 players within 3 shots of the lead but it was McIlroy who remained composed and got the job done. This win moves him into the top 5 in the world and a huge boost in confidence for golf’s first Major in just 3 week’s time! Rory just needs a win at Augusta to add to his stellar portfolio and become the 6th man in history to do the personal grand slam and put him up there with Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Gary Player, Ben Hogan and Gene Sarazen. Not a bad group to be associated with! |

For the rest, local man Jim Furyk flew through the field at the weekend and just came up one shot short. At 48, he obviously comes from the same vintage as Vijay and Phil who think age is no barrier when it comes to competing against players half their age. He wasn`t even in the field the Sunday before the event started but course knowledge set the former Ryder Cup Captain up to a fantastic second place which could have been first had his putt on the 17th not missed. Once again Europe were heavily represented going into the last round with Spaniard Jon Rahm shooting 64 to take the lead on Saturday evening and Tommy Fleetwood playing alongside him in the last group. But with cold putters and strange strategy, neither could stay ahead of Rory who now adds another PGA title to his CV.

Ready for spring… It has been a week of change with our Under Armour hitting the walls. As you can see, just about all areas of clothing are covered. There are shoes and gloves also available and will be displayed as soon as Under Armour can get the suitable shelving delivered. Already garments are being purchased and orders taken so thanks very much for your support. Much of the shop has been redressed for spring. The ladies wall is now full of coloured outfits, new shoe styles from FootJoy and Skechers as well as new colours from Glenmuir. Ladies don`t forget, April 4th from 1.30 pm is our annual fashion display where you get to see all the latest creations from one of golf’s leading British brands. If anything is to go by, you may need to be on time to get a choice.

Who says people of a certain age can`t learn anymore? Despite the wind and hollow cored greens last Friday, two of Orsett` s senior members, Pat Purcell and David Rayner played some amazing golf. Only playing thirteen holes because of the wind ,Pat scored 31 points and David 25 respectively. Both have had some refresher lessons with me this month which proved invaluable obviously. If your game could do with an MOT then get in touch with Phil or myself. It might be the best few pounds spent rather than "guessing and "struggling" to find an answer. Six Nations Rugby Don`t know if anyone noticed but little old Wales won the Six Nations Rugby Grand Slam last weekend by blasting the defending Grand Slam Champions Ireland "off the park" 25-7.Ireland`s only points came in extra time, what a performance from the boys in red. Among the England fans in the Club there was talk of Ireland "rolling over" in a conspiracy to stop England becoming Champions but having watched the game if that was rolling over, I wouldn`t want to be involved in a fully committed game. This moves Wales into second in the World rankings and showing the right form with the World Cup just a few months away. England finished runners up with a bizarre performance against Scotland in their last game being 24 points ahead at half time, they needed a try in extra time to draw! Perhaps they should have paid more attention to their own game to seal the win. Sport just keeps throwing out surprises sometimes!
