That’s why he is The Open Champion... Frankie Molinari once again confirmed that he has moved up into the elite level of top professional golf. He cruised through the field on Sunday at Bay Hill, the home of Arnold Palmer, with a closing 64 to take his second PGA Tour win and show the rest he is ready for The Players Championship this week at Sawgrass. Molinari holed 144 feet of putts on Sunday and said "thats the best round of putting I`ve ever had" when speaking to the world’s media. It just goes to prove how important it is to putt well if you want to win at any level. I would now make him a strong candidate for The Masters in just a few weeks’ time at Augusta and he will be a good price hopefully. Speaking of which, our Masters draw is in full swing with very few numbers left to be drawn, so wait no longer or you may miss out! The other half of Mollywood, Tommy Fleetwood, and leader at Bay Hill after 36 holes managed a final round 68 to tie for third. In between these two was third round leader and another Brit, Matt Fitzpatrick, who shot a final round 70 and his best ever finish in America. Defending champion Rory McIlroy, once again in the last pairing of the final round had a lacklustre finish with a 72 that saw the Ulster man finish in a tie for 6th at 8 under with yet another Englishman, Matt Wallace who was playing in only his second PGA Tour event. With Rafa Cabrera Bello tying Fleetwood, the Europeans put on a great show, long may it continue this week! |
They all move up I95 this week to Sawgrass, Jacksonville and golfs "5th"Major with one of the most notorious par 3s in the game waiting to make a hero or villain out of someone, the infamous 17th! No longer than Orsett’s 12th hole but what a design. The water surrounding the green can change the players focus so easily, even with just a wedge in hand. If Rory could just make a few putts he would lap the field, perhaps this week it will happen for him. Anyone who is anyone should be there, including Tiger who is fit to play this week having withdrawn last week through injury. It is all bubbling up nicely with the big hitters manoeuvring into place for another showdown. Tee times have been announced and the groups look pretty tasty!

Maintenance… Perry`s annual course maintenance has taken place this week as the greens have been carefully cored, swept and sanded for the weeks ahead. We know it must take place to give the grass on the greens the strength to deal with the stress they are put under daily. It also helps to clear the thatch and even some bacteria that may have built up through the winter and to encourage root strength. In no time they will be playing better than last year and that`s saying something!

Daily Mail Foursomes The Ladies section opened up their account in the Daily Mail Foursomes last weekend with a win against Thorndon Park 8&6. Karen Batch and Tina Gregory really put their opponents in their place with some excellent golf in extremely gusty conditions on Saturday. Well played girls, onto the next round!
Blown away… Once again the weather curtailed another Orsett qualifying event at the weekend. Last time it was fog (rearranged for this coming Sunday) and this time it was 50-60 mile an hour winds. We finally called a halt when the balls were blowing off the green at the 10th!

A trip to an Open venue… I mentioned that Phil and I were taking some teams to the Essex PGA event last week. The results are in and Phil’s team finished a very commendable tied 3rd place around Royal Cinque Ports and Royal St Georges, where next year’s Open Championship is being held. My team just didn`t get going on the greens (there is that subject again) and finished15th. Thanks to those for coming along to take part, it is always a brilliant event. So much work is being carried out at both venues as RCP plays host to Final Qualifying, they are even putting sprinklers on the pathways! Here is what you can expect when you go there, perfect weather, fairways that don`t appear to be there and of course the thatched roofed huts that St Georges in renowned for.

Sport round-up… Well done to Jeff Mathewson last week for being the first to reply to the quick question I put out about the oldest winner on the PGA Tour. For those not as knowledgeable as Jeff, the answer was Sam Snead. Last and definitely not least, a huge game of rugby takes place this weekend as all eyes will be on Cardiff with Wales hosting Ireland in the Six Nations Championship. If Wales win they become Grand Slam Champions, other permutations mean Ireland and England could also be Champions. So a really exciting round of matches! Even with so much at stake and huge rivalry involved, I`m positive there won`t be supporters running on the pitch to take a cheap shot at an opposing player! Who would want to slap one of those boys, likes last week with that ridiculous fan behaviour not once but three separate occasions at football matches. At least authorities manned up and delivered a suitable punishment. Enjoy a great weekend of sport!

Motocaddy has always been at the forefront of trolley innovation, with the world's first GPS electric trolley amongst their ranks. Well, this year they’ve made some significant upgrades to the immensly popular S1 model, which we think you're going to love. |
| New Motocaddy S1 electric trolley (2019) |
|
We don't like using the term 'entry level' to describe the new S1 as it offers so much more than what this suggests. At first glance, you'll take a liking to its modernised styling and graphics, which will really help make it stand out from other trolleys on the market. Then you get to its technology: new and improved sunlight-friendly LCD display, nine speed settings, advanced battery meter so you needn't worry about it running out mid-round without knowing, and a super-lightweight Lithium battery to name but a few. The new S1 for 2019 is as good as it gets at this price point, so pop in-store to take a look and get one in your hands. |
