When having an 80 isn`t so bad The season ending Tour Championship couldn`t have had a better climax could it? Arguably the greatest golfer of all time has shown he is still a force in the game at 42 years old. This time last year Tiger Woods could barely play after career threatening surgery, just about everyone wrote him off in the media. His rise from the lowly World ranking position 1,999 , now stands at an amazing No 13 which is nothing short of what Tiger has been about his whole career. The will and determination to prove everyone wrong and more importantly to himself that he still has the game to compete.

Woods was masterful all week, staying calm and out of the rough much of the week. His putting looked like Tiger at his best from inside 10 feet and the “lesson” he dished out to his closest pursuers Sunday, Rory and Justin, was just a lovely little subplot. Of course we all wanted a Brit to win but Tiger has been getting closer each month to his 80th win and what perfect timing it was when it happened. He must surely not want the season to end and Augusta to be before Christmas. He has had well documented problems for the last 10 years and whether we have sympathy with some or all of it, the game of golf is definitely better for having Tiger playing. The scenes on the 18th fairway on Sunday as Tiger finished said much the same. America loves a winner and Tiger ”the big cat” is certainly one of those. For the last 20 years Tiger has “raised the bar” ,”moved the needle” allowing us to be entertained on a new scale. The emotions that were clear for all to see in his post interviews were just an honest reflection of what he put into reaching those incredible heights. He stands just two wins behind all-time tournament winner Sam Snead, would you bet against him not passing that milestone now? Glad to see you well and truly back in the game Tiger. |
Justin Rose and Rory Mcilroy played well for 54 holes in the Tour Championship; the Brits were Woods closest challengers and probably thought they might be able to get him a little twitchy on Sunday. Rose was also playing for plan B and the lovely pot of gold from the FedEx, which he must have felt was slipping through his fingers on the back nine. Bravely he made a fabulous birdie on the last to win the 10 million and will see his name as Numero Uno in the world for at least another week. His consistency has been his success and like many of the top players must be looking forward to a well-earned break from the game. There is just a little matter of a little gold cup this week to wrestle back in France.

Ooo la la, The Ryder Cup begins! It`s all change with the Ryder Cup happening in Europe this week. A much cooler temperature than a sweaty Atlanta and a bit more than a zephyr will bring out the best of the players skills. To me, many of those who will be playing at Paris National looked a little jaded last week and the Captains and their Vices will have a lot to wrestle with picking their form players too much and giving them a rest. It could be that the likes of Sergio, Stenson and Spieth are the top points scorers for either side having not played much recently and will be “stoked” to compete. The Ryder Cup players do manage to find another 10% from their games at the end of a long season and of course with it being matchplay, it’s all about the win. |

Record breaker! Just when it couldn`t get much better, Essex Tour player Ollie Fisher became the first player in European Tour history to break 60. In the Portuguese Masters 2nd round last week, the Chigwell resident played superbly for the record. In fact the putt on the last nearly went in for 58, unfortunately it didn`t lead to a win in the event, that went to Tom Lewis who had been showing great form on the Challenge Tour the previous few weeks but it should boost Fishers confidence with the last few events to come before the season ending Race to Dubai Championships. With Richie McEvoy winning as well, Essex are really getting put on the map this season.
Have a great weekend, playing or viewing David

New irons to improve your game |
Buying a set of clubs is exciting, but can be a tricky decision - you might love the look of the short irons, but feel a bit daunted by the longer clubs further up the set. However, you can always mix and match your clubs so that your long irons are more forgiving and your short irons are more workable, allowing you to strike approach shots from any distance with confidence. |
Mix & match with Lynx Why not try combining the short irons of Lynx's Forged CB series with the longer irons of the Prowler VT? The VT's extra forgiveness, provided by a hollow head design, gives you better performance on any off-centre strikes, meaning that your long iron shots won't stray as wide when you mishit the ball. Combine this with the Forged CB's short irons, which feature a narrow sole, thin topline and minimal offset for better workability and increased confidence lower down the set, and you'll be peppering the flags from your wedges up to your long irons. Could mixing sets be the answer you've been looking for? |
