Charity begins at home… Orsett held their third Prostrate Cancer charity afternoon last week, organised by Orsett member Ronnie Wilkes. Twenty four teams took part in the shotgun affair and helped swell the finances a little for this important treatment. Each year has been bigger and we have been able to send a larger donation than the previous year and this is true from the generous support from the membership. Ronnie said last weekend “I`m overwhelmed with the support from both the Club and its members have given to this cause. On top of all the other things the members support, it just shows what a great group of members we have here” The winners on the day was obviously the Prostrate Cancer Charity but the prize winners were:
- 1st - Dave Wright, Graham Rees, Bob Hillion & Jim Carr
- 2nd - Jim Conner, Peter Aves, Dave Millane & George Carroll
- 3rd - Rob Percival,Will Percival,Joe Hunt & Genn Eastman
1st ladies - Rita Briggs, Bonnie Pulham, Mary Watson & Joan Sadler - Nearest the pin ladies - Katy Grant
- Nearest the pin ladies men - Carl Vanderhook
- Longest drive - Shaun Mills

Scratch Matchplay The weekend saw the men’s Scratch Match play being held. Last year’s winner Alfie Buttle was exempt from the recent qualifying into the 16 man field. Some excellent match ups saw plenty of good golf on Saturday. The semi-finalists were matched up with Alfie playing Carl Vanderhook and Joe Green playing Steve McAnally as things were hotting up. Carl played extremely well to win 5&4, meanwhile the other semi-final went to the last green with Joe just getting the edge. The final was played in great conditions and was matched with the golf. There were birdies either way to the 9th with Carls chip in which then galvanised Joe into some very solid golf, with no dropped shots around to the 17th where the two players finally shook hands and Joe was crowned champion. Joe had been part of the Thornton Cup team all season and used that experience to win some of the earlier rounds. With Zach Chegwidden winning the Stroke play Championship, the youth in the Club are beginning to show their potential shine through. Congratulations Joe, a coveted Club title to your name! The Ladies played their Club Championship stroke play as well on Sunday and Angie Paton came out on top of the pile. Twelve ladies braved the 36 holes in very warm weather and Angie laid the foundations to her win by having an eight shot lead at lunch. The deficit was closed by Katy Grant but it was just too much to make up in the end. Well played Angie, Club Champion again! |
Maintenance week gets going… After the fairway scarifying and with all the major Club competitions over for the season, Perry and the staff have begun on their annual autumn crusade of preparing the greens for the winter and the following season. Coring and aeration, then back filling with high quality seed and sand will further enrich all the good work of the previous few years. Of course the greens will look and putt unpredictably for some days ahead but they have improved immeasurably in the last three seasons. Firmer, truer and what everyone wants, faster surfaces have been created and with the onset of changes to the grasses, they will continue to get even better. With the course taking plenty of “traffic” this work is essential to give the grass the opportunity to respond so roots can get longer and stronger to survive whatever nature, players and green staff throws at them. This always seems to occur just when the greens are great for playing on. Many clubs do this work in August, so let’s be thankful ours takes place four weeks later.

An autumnal feel As I mentioned last week the shop is evolving into autumn, we will soon be clearing all the last of the summer items to make way for the dreaded waterproofs. So it`s a good time to catch a real bargain this week before it leaves the displays.
New Mizuno JPX 919 We are ready for anyone who is interested in the new Mizuno irons. We have all the fitting choices from Mizuno at last and you would be among the first to own the new irons in October by pre ordering. Remember, the fitting process is really important to getting the most out of your clubs. With me it all comes in the cost of the clubs unlike other outlets. We have the most up to date DNA fitting cart available and alongside the GC2 launch monitor it compliments it perfectly. Click here to make use of it and us.

And the Tour Champion is… This week sees the season ending FedEx Cup playoffs coming to its completion with the Tour Championship in Atlanta, at the famous East Lake Country Club where the great Bobby Jones played. Bryson DeChambeau has a firm grip on the $10 million given to the overall winner. There are numerous permutations for winners but “DeShambles” is definitely in pole position. World No 1 Justin Rose is his closest pursuer, with Tony Finau, Dustin Johnson and Justin Thomas in the other top 5 places that make it easier for the huge bonus. In the last couple of years the two nines have been flipped around so the last is now an exciting par 5 and not a torrid 234yard par 3. Everyone will be trying like mad (who wouldn`t) for the win. The $10 million bonus doesn`t always go to the winner so how others finish can decide who gets it. Of course all the ranking points and invitations all increase the incentives for these top 30 players. It will be great watching no doubt! Enjoy the great weather for the rest of the week. Next week I’m taking some members to Sunningdale, arguably the best pair of inland courses in the UK. I hope to envy you with the pictures and then it’s all about the Ryder Cup.

With the Ryder Cup coming up next week, we can expect plenty of tense moments, particularly on the greens. You’ll probably notice that players on both sides will have the ability to hole out under huge amounts of pressure – who can forget Ian Poulter’s clutch putt on the 16th green at Medinah in 2012? |
Find a putter you can trust To replicate these kind of putts, whether that's in the monthly medal or playing for money with your friends, you need to choose a flatstick you can trust. Why not try out the PING Vault 2.0 Dale Stealth putter? It's a conventional shaped putter so will suit those of you looking for a classic option, and is also available in both Platinum and Copper finishes. If you have a slightly arced stroke, then we couldn't recommend this putter enough. |
