Thornton Cup Semi-final number three was just a semi-final too far unfortunately for Kevin Lyons’s Thornton Cup side last Sunday. Perhaps the team wanted it just too much and lost their grip of the coveted trophy going down 11.5 -3.5 to Thorndon Park. Club Captain Kevin Lyons was full of emotions: "The boys have performed so well all season and to reach a third semi-final was amazing. It has been a fabulous part of my Club Captaincy being around the team and I can only thank them all. We have to give credit where it`s due, Thorndon Park outplayed us on the day and got the job done. We will no doubt be back just as strong or stronger next season and hopefully we can go that step further once again. Thanks boys, it was an honour." This Saturday, its the Cadets opportunity to make the final. They have a semi-final against Abridge at Colchester for the right to play in the final. We wish Mark and his team all the very best of luck.

Pro’s Day Last weekend I hosted my annual Pro’s Day, an 18 hole, 38 team event for fun, laughter and prizes. There were the main prizes, nearest the pin opportunities, and even a bit of cricket with plenty of refreshments along the way. Strange tee locations, wicked flag positions and mini clubs added to the fun and distress out on the course. Played in dry conditions for a change (don`t have a BBQ when Pros Day is on, it normally rains). Prizes were shared among all sections of the Club with very tight scoring, I guess those who didn`t fare so well enjoyed the drinks huts a little too much! Overall winners
1st - Paul Barker, Kevin Lewis, Steve Golding & Graham Dunn 2nd - Dan Clark, Tony Juson, Gary Gutteridge & Robbie Slaughter 3rd - Hamish Green, Denis Mayes, Owen Carney & Aron Waters 4th - Martin Bennett, John Ryan, Dave Hardingham & Peter Underwood 5th - Katy Grant, Shaun Mills, Tony Brown & Nicky Porter
Ladies team winners: - Eileen Wilkes, Donna Smith, Sue Button & Glynis Oake
Nearest the pin winners: - Hole 3 = Jason Spink
- Hole 8 = Tony Brown
- Hole 12 = Ronnie Wilkes
- Hole 15 = Cass Steffens

The winning team score was built on Graham Dunn’s 9 pars and a birdie off a 24 handicap. Well played Dunny! One of the not so good shots of the day caught on camera was by Joe "Leeds Leeds Leeds"Knight. Granted the clubs were a little shorter than usual and possibly more flexible ... the 12th tee needed reseeding after his effort below.... Many thanks to all who participated, I`m looking forward to next year’s already!

For those who may have not been at the Club recently, don`t forget to pop in and take a look at our clothing sale. Currently all store clothing is 25% discounted from its ticket price. This includes the Club Glenmuir lines, Oscar Jacobson and Island Green items. It won`t be here forever! This Sunday, Club Captain Kevin, hosts his Captains Day. Another of the hugely popular days in the calendar, in fact all week Kevin hosts the 5 day members, Cadets, Ladies and full members so a pretty busy schedule! Around 200 are playing Sunday and there is room for a few more. Make up a four ball or a pair and get in touch and we will offer a tee time. With a presentation and a BBQ to follow, it will be a fun day all round.

Ryder Cup places are hotting up for Europe! Thomas Bjorn must be hoping some of his "stars" like Henrik Stenson, Sergio Garcia can find some form and quickly. Sergio, believe it or not has one of Europe’s best CVs, with only Ryder Cup "Gods" Poulter and Montgomerie, along with Justin Rose having a better win ratio. |
Sergio, like all Spaniards just loves "beating Americans" perhaps it was instilled in him by Jose Maria as it was in him by Seve. Even if it means questioning the ball they use, (remember that one?)Garcia must be on for a wildcard and so too Stenson. He has missed Ryder Cups previously but has been a perfect partner for Justin Rose in recent matches. The team will have new European blood to bed in, yet the team philosophy for the week will be huge, let’s hope Bjorn can maintain all that is good for the Europeans. America may have just found their 9th player in Brant Snedeker, he won the latest American Tour event in North Carolina and opened up with a holy grail 59 in the first round. He became the 9th player to achieve that feat, would you want to face him when he is on form with that putter of his? It`s gathering fabulous momentum, America will be favourites, Europe have home advantage, course knowledge and a 13th man in the crowd. It could make all the difference in just over a months’ time. |

With the Premier League back up and running, not much has changed! Jose is still moaning about his lot and Man City are scoring freely. Who can realistically challenge the sky blue half of Manchester this season? I know its early days but I think everyone else are playing for second already.
