Match reports Orsett men’s teams had mixed fortunes in their recent matches. Vice-captain David Chegwidden’ s Leslie Wood team made light work on a soggy Mardyke Valley course winning 12-3 at their neighbours course. A solid 4-1 lunch time lead meant the singles would be straight forward and thankfully this proved to be correct. "A good start for the team, with some new inexperienced players in our side. I was pleased the foursomes pairings worked out as this is never easy sometimes, we now play Maldon at home which should help our team relax a little and play their best golf which will be needed to be successful" The Norman Plum side did not fare so well. Losing 2-1 at home and 2.5 -0.5 away meant that they will have to wait another season for any glory loosing to a difficult side in The Burstead, who loved a dry Orsett course and had the ability to play more consistently on their less the dry layout. The thriller was left until midweek when the Club Seniors hosted Crondon Park who again enjoyed the dry running conditions. The match finished 5-5 only for the sudden death maestro, Bob Page, to hold his nerve against the big hitting Crondon playoff player. A half on the first caused even more tension. Bob used all his match experience and won the difficult 2nd. Well done team, it builds the momentum now for round two.
Saturday Cup At home, Dave Beasley won the first of the honours board events of the season, beating three other players on count back with a nett 70. He beat inform Thornton Cup player Charles Locke, Paul King and Warren Girt for the Saturday Cup. "Beas" had been a little off the radar last year and contemplated not playing this year, but with a couple of winter lessons and a few less Guinness on Friday night than normal, he was back to winning ways, as he said "Preparation is everything". Welcome back to the winners circle Beas.
