WGC – Mexico Phil Mickelson added to his glittering career with his 43rd professional win at the WGC in Mexico last week. He beat America’s hottest player, Justin Thomas, in a play-off on the 17th hole. Mickelson was without a win since the 2013 Open championship and played some fabulous golf to win his latest tournament. "Lefty" as he is known, had made a fine start to his season, with 3 top ten finishes from his three events. With a new coach and a back swing he can now trust, all could be about to change and reignite the latest part of his illustrious career at the age of 47. Perhaps it should be the young guns looking over their shoulder at both he and Tiger, not the latter peering into the distance. Mickelson was excellent from the tee all week and used his head wisely. Playing at such high altitude meant distance was never going to be an issue but keeping the ball in the narrow fairways was. However when the driver did come out, drives over 350 yards were the norm and some over 400 yards!
On awkward Poa Annua greens and distance control decided by air temperature, Mickelson was sublime and kept his own cool too. His interaction with the Mexican galleries got the locals on his side. Even during the last round at a crucial stage when chipping out of the bushes and hitting a lady spectator, which stopped his ball reaching a clear view of the green he managed to maintain his smile outwardly. Compare this to one of our own and the new breed, Tyrell Hatton, an exceptional player, yet with sometimes the ability to whine more than a puppy being taken from the litter for the first time (which is a reason to whine). Hatton moaned at virtually every missed putt, complained about the putting surfaces or any bad lie around the green openly for all the TV world to see. We all know golfers like that, I`m sure had he kept his cool it possibly could have been Tyrells name on the trophy. He is a fabulous player and must be in the reckoning for Ryder Cup honours. Would you want him as a partner for 2 days with that attitude? |
Mickelson exudes charisma and with the way he plays at times, who wouldn`t want to watch him? With Augusta lurking in a few weeks, he`s a "horse for the course". Top weight he maybe, but course winner and with incredible confidence from his form at the moment, he will surely be a threat and feature. Perhaps age has finally reigned in that gun ho mentality. Being a crowd pleaser doesn`t always mean he needs to constantly reach for the driver. |

As I mentioned he beat JT in the playoff. The world No 2 was "out "of the event seemingly after 2 rounds in mid field and just happy to try and maintain his lead in the Fed Ex standings. But a third round 62 changed all that, followed by a Sunday 64 which couldn`t have finished more spectacularly with a holed out wedge shot for an eagle that jumped him into the lead, could you score better over the weekend?. Yet, ‘Lefty’ putted beautifully on the back nine, holing four key putts including a "Dennis Wise" (nasty little one) from 2 and 1/2 foot on the last. Hatton had his chance too, tied with Phil and JT playing the last, he missed the green, hit a poor recovery, complained about the lie and followed it up with a putt that did hop in fairness an inch in the air soon after striking it, stopping any chance of the ball reaching the hole. Karma maybe? A fine win for Mickelson, a whole load of new fans to the game just as Mr Palmer would have liked and would have enjoyed watching Phil entertaining and interacting with the fans just as it was in his day.

New sand at Orsett Are we trying to compete with Augusta and their amazing crushed marble bunkers? I`d like to say "yes" but it`s the remnants of "The beast from the east and the pest out of the west". They look amazing even so!

New arrivals I feel like a cardboard recycling centre at the moment with the number of boxes being delivered this week after the snow. Seriously though, our new 2018 shoe ranges from FootJoy and Skechers are now available to view. Should you be considering updating your shoes, now is the perfect time. The notable new shoe from FootJoy is the Tour S, its FJ’s most stable shoe ever but has not taken away from its comfort. With so much technology in the shoe, it isn`t form the budget end of their range. Also, back by popular demand is the Comfort Fit and Energize models. What are they like? Try them on yourself and see why they were so popular last season. Skechers have introduced their new Fairway Lead. They are extremely light, you won’t know you have them on your feet! They are possibly the ideal summer shoe for wearing to the golf course, playing on firm ground or the driving range. They need to be tried on to be believed.

These opportunities are highly prized and with the waiting time for a fitting at Callaway`s headquarters touching 2 months, we are fortunate to get this. Have a good game! Enjoy being back out on the course this weekend. Perry and the staff have done an amazing job. All 18 holes open by Tuesday and playing a competition Wednesday. Where else in Essex would this happen? Well done boys. I`m battling around Royal Cinque Ports and Royal St Georges next week with three of our members in an Essex PGA Pro Am. Will let you know what happened when I get back, David

Listen to what he has to say |
We’ve been hammering home the importance of getting your clubs regripped for the past few weeks now, so we thought we’d take a closer look at one particular grip that we’re currently offering to put on your 7-iron for FREE… |

Why try the Golf Pride Align grip? You might think launching a new golf grip is like reinventing the wheel, but this Golf Pride Align grip really has broken the mould. Its key feature is the raised ridge on the back of the grip. By feeling this ridge each time you hold a club, you’ll have a physical aid to your grip position. This will help you achieve more consistent hand placements, which should only lead to more consistent results. |
