Escape to the sun
Last week I took three members to Spain to play in an Essex PGA Pro Am near the Spanish/Portuguese border. Getting three players to go wasn`t difficult with the offer of 25 degrees, quick greens, free drinks from 5pm until midnight and a chance to win some prizes. After day one we languished in 12th spot, but moved up to 10th after day 2 and, with a fabulous last day’s golf from all four of the team made up of Dave Beasley, Ash Mahmood and Chris Rate, we finally received a little luck and started to hole some putts to storm through the field to a creditable 4th place, just a couple of points off the podium. Well done team.15 under par on the last day was a great effort . Ok the legs aren`t too clever but hello sunshine! Of course it was as much about the socialising as the event, getting some warm sun on our backs and a little socializing; did I mention that?
Their are always some funny stories on these trips and luckily we were not involved in the funniest. The Professional in the group in front on the final day – who shall remain nameless - on the 16th hole, a par 5 surrounded by water from tee to green witnessed his playing partners hit ball after ball into the hazards all along the hole. The Professional then also misjudged his iron shot and while trying to fish his ball out of the edge of the lake lost his footing and slid straight in up to his neck!
Apparently he was standing in the lake brandishing his wedge like a sword waiting for a team mate to help him out. We had witnessed just about every ball going in but we all somehow missed him going in and coming out! His team felt it was such a great gesture to lift the team spirits having played the hole so badly. At breakfast the next morning the team presented him with a swimming cap in case it happened again .
A fun trip and looking forward to the next one already.
