Rules gone mad? Some of the silent auction prizes were donated by Matt Southgate from the European Tour who has a well-documented recent history with a similar illness. He has gone on to have a spectacular last couple of years culminating in playing some events on the Web.com Tour which is the stepping stone to the PGA Tour. Matt was going well in the DAP event last week when something incredible happened. As his ball rolled toward the hole on a 6 foot putt, a leaf knocked his ball off line causing a missed putt. Surprised, shocked, call it what you want, Matt tapped in the next one, completed his round after a bogey and double bogey, only to find out he had been penalised 4 shots for proceeding incorrectly. Two for NOT replaying the original putt which had be deflected in motion and two for scoring for the wrong score. It goes right up there with the ruling, referee, Andy McFee gave against Jordan Spieth in the recent Presidents Cup blowout for stopping Louis Oosthuizen ball from going down a slope and toward the water when the South African’s score on the hole would not have been counted as his playing partner Jason Day was in the hole for fewer. McFee penalised Spieth for "exerting influence’ on his opponent’s ball when in fact he was just stopping it from going in the water. Spieth got disqualified from the hole and as his partner had already had too many The World team was awarded the hole somewhat embarrassingly even after asking the referee to rescind his decision.
