Club Cup
Jack Jordan helped himself to another "gold letters" trophy last weekend. The 19 year old beat wiley campaigner Colin Hodges on count back with a nett 66 to win the Club Cup. An unusual event as all members with a full handicap could play alongside each other. This year the men took all three top spots with cadet, Callum Newton scoring a net 68 off 3 to complete the podium. One other happy competitor was Sean Kinsella Jnr who managed a hole in one on the 12th. He also took 50% of the 2s club money which made it even more satisfying. Jack was also the winner of the recent Limit Cup so wants just one more to make a hat trick for the season. Nice playing everyone, great scoring.
S5 Connect
The new S5 trolley from Motocaddy certainly seems to have grabbed your interest. It has only been in the shop for a week and the questions and viewing has been incredible. Not only does it have a GPS system blue toothed from the app but you will never miss a call, message, text or important email again. Sounds like it is encouraging more phone use on the course. It can also show apps such as Whatsapp and facebook so you can instantly let everyone know how well your round is going! All that for an extra £100.00 at £549.99, what an ingenious piece of technology.
Sweepstake Nearly Complete..
Last week I mentioned The Open sweepstake was up and running and this week it is nearly sold out. If you would like to be part of the fun then pop in the Pro Shop at Orsett and purchase a ticket. They are priced at £5.00 per ticket and gets you a chance to be among the winners. Remember, snooze you lose.
Tommy Wins In....Jogging Bottoms?
Tommy Fleetwood won the French Open last week with some amazing golf. Unfortunately the same can`t be said of his new Nike clothing on Saturday .Coming from Southport quite near to Liverpool he might have felt at home in his jogging bottoms. Had it rained, Nike might have just asked him to wear their version of a shell suit! As other manufacturers have done such as Puma, Adidas and Nike are trying to appeal to the youth who play. High top golf shoes and elasticated trouser cuffs might have been useful on the African safari Tour when I played for a different reason but nowadays it just isn`t "the look required" If they had been the right leg length it might have helped but to me it was more a case of "I`ve stolen them so I`m wearing them."
Personally I`m surprised the Tour officials actually allow it no matter what Tour is represented. If you think it is good for the game or not really the look even for the 21st Century golfer then let me know. Results on it next week.
Also, did anyone see Haotong Li's mum try to retrieve his putter last week. A great effort from Mrs Li much to the amusement of the players watching. Take a look at the video here. All that effort for just a grip.
Lions Smell Glory
So the Lions levelled the series against the All Blacks. A monumental win (even against 14 players) the kiwis hadn't lost a home test match for 9 years! It is all to play for next week at fortress Eden Park. If the Lions thought the pace was hot in wellington, it`s just going to be even hotter this weekend with a series on the line. Standout players for the Lions were Captain Sam Warburton, who was at every break down and being followed in by Maro Itoje, the England lock who was man of the match in my eyes and Jonny Sexton. The whole team played well and Gatland got the 10, 12 combination right leaving Teo on the bench. Farrell is not the tackler Teo is but is the perfect foil for Sexton to run the attack. This next test is all about heart. Do the Lions want to be legends like the `71 touring side? The Kiwis certainly don`t want the tag of losing 2 tests back to back for the first time at home. It will be a top game, no quarter given and hopefully plenty of good rugby. Come on you Lions!!
The Irish Open
It's the Irish Open this week and Rory is back in Ireland lending support to the event. Irish events are hugely supported and Rory will make it even bigger. The North doesn't see too much golf at this level so having it`s favourite son back home will be fantastic. Rors personally needs a good week with Birkdale just around the corner and being the title holder it will add a little incentive to his play. It`s a bit of a forerunner to the Open due to be held next door at Royal Portrush, another of Irelands great links venues. It should make for good watching so let's hope the weather holds up.
This weekend is flooded with great sport and I haven`t mentioned Wimbledon and the Tour De France either!
Have a great weekend,
regards,
David
