As stated in last week's newsletter, my assistant Richie Wistow is moving on to pastures new. He will be at the club over the weekend so if you see him make sure to wish him well and share a drink or two!
It's finally here, the best golfing event in America and the one we've all been waiting for. Augusta looks at its finest and the anticipation around the Club is enormous. Lee Maskell and Graham Button have drawn favourite Dustin Johnson in our sweepstakes and are favourites themselves to be wearing the green jacket come Monday morning.
Who has the second hottest player Jon Rahm on the planet? Jon Berry and Dan Clark. And who has plucked past winner but rank outsider Sandy Lyle? Bonnie Pulham and James Irving!
The draw is now up in the Pro Shop for you to check who your money has gone on. Nothing gets people back playing and talking about golf like the Masters. So many non-golfers watch the event for the course and surroundings as much as the golf.
This years could be outstanding with so many players in with a shout. DJ is obviously the man to beat this week but can he overcome the Masters nerves? It will all unfold with amazing views loud roars of approval and of course the drama that no other course seems to create. Will anyone forget Jordan's chunk into Rae's creek on the 12th for the second time while holding a five shot lead? Come to think of it how many were still watching or had gone to bed thinking Spieth can't lose with a five shot lead and just nine to play? Or Bubbas amazing 40 yard hooked wedge in the playoff against Louis?
Of course it's the first Masters since Mr Palmers passing which I'm sure will be acknowledged. Even he lost a title when he made 6 from the middle of the fairway on the last in the 60s. The drama will be there, the intensity will be there and the super slippery greens will be there. I can't wait!
Orsett ladies maintained their good form in the Daily Mail foursomes at the weekend. Angie Paton and Kay Dalton had a commanding win of 6/5 against Mid Kent and now move onto the third round. Well done girls keep up the good work. Get in touch with the Lady's Captain, Chris Gordon for information about the 3rd round match.
It's the Thornton Cup first round this weekend and Orsett set off on their quest to retain the trophy they won last season with an away tie at Risebridge. The team are prepared having played a curtain raiser against the Essex Colts last Sunday and even though they lost by the narrowest of margins, Team Captain, Steve Rooney was pleased.
"It showed that we needed the match. Many of the team have hardly played any foursomes since the final and it gave the new members of the squad the opportunity to get involved and start to embrace the team spirit. The game this coming weekend needs our full attention, we won't be taking anything for granted"
Any support would be welcome, a friendly face at an away fixture can make a difference. Also out on the course are Jimmy Carrs Plums. They have a match against Play golf Colchester on a home and away basis. It's a great event for the category 3 and 4 players in the Club. Again any support would be very welcome.
With the first Men's Major looming, last week provided us with the first Ladies Major in California. It won't be the winner who will be remembered but Lexi Thompson who got a 4 shot penalty for miss-replacing her ball on the putting green. Sadly it was a person watching on TV who noticed it and called in. She suffered a 4 shot penalty, 2 for not replacing her ball in the same spot and 2 for signing for the wrong score on the hole.
Thompson was notified 6 holes from the end of the tournament. Her lead evaporated and with her head all over the place she somehow made a birdie to get in the playoff only to lose it. She did make a mistake but nobody called it at the time. Golf must be the only sport where non officials can influence the event in this way. Couldn't imagine this happening at a football match? The game would never get finished!
So enjoy the golf from Augusta and make sure you put your ball back properly when you mark it!
