Orsett member, Howard Koch made it number three with a beautifully crafted 8 iron straight in the hole on Orsett`s 153 yard par 3 third.
Nothing beats the thrill of a hole in one, which was the second on home soil. With the congratulations also comes the traditional bar bill which for Howard was substantial as he managed to hole out on Turkey Trott day with 186 people taking part!
Howard took both plaudits and leg pulling with his customary style.
Even the bar bill couldn't wipe the smile from his face.
Orsett open their defence of the Thornton Cup with an away tie at Risebridge. Team Captain, Steve Rooney's first thoughts were" a home tie would have been nice but we played every match away from home last year to win it so we know how to prepare"
The Leslie Wood team are at home to Harwich and Dovercourt, Seniors have an away tie at Wanstead and the Norman Plum boys meet Play golf Colchester. The team Captains will be putting up lists shortly for those who express an interest in representing the Club in these matches, so keep an eye on the notice boards.
Stenson joins the elite...
Henrik Stenson joined an illustrious group of European Tour stand outs by making it 2 Race to Dubai order of merit titles. The Swede joins the likes of Seve, Faldo, Langer, and Montgomerie. McIlroy and Els as a multiple winner. With Masters Champion, Danny Willet and fast finishing Alex Noren holding slender hopes of passing him, Open Champion, Stenson cruised round in 65 to make sure of the title.
Tour Championship winner in Dubai though and a welcome return to form was Matt Fitzpatrick. The Yorkshire man played all 4 rounds in the 60s and held off another English player, Tyrell Hatton. Hatton has made great strides this season and with confidence high, could he be the next Brit to gate crash the Major scene?
It couldn`t be missed either, Essex Tour player Matt Southgate had an incredible year. With his well-documented illness behind him and finished 56th on the RTD. A Tour School graduate, Matt had a top 4 finish in Ireland and a top 12 finish at The Open. With a couple of other top 5s the Essex man has done himself proud. Just a win next season would do the job and give all of Essex aspiring junior golfers someone to look up to.
With the bunker sand becoming a little wetter and more compact after this weekend's rains, consider using either your 60 degree Lob wedge or 52 degree gap wedge when playing from greenside bunkers. Why? If you are carrying the correct wedges, the "softer" lower bounce on these 2 wedge soles compared to the sand iron is less likely, on contacting the sand, to bounce up or skid into the middle of the ball. Give it a try, if you need any help, get in touch and I`ll only be too happy to help you improve those winter bunker shots.
It could be a perfect opportunity to replace those leaky golf shoes.
