Orsett County Club, first teamers won the Thornton Cup last weekend at Chelmsford against Rochford Hundred in a thriller.
Orsett got to lunch in their usual style, 3-2 down, they had only once lead the singles all season and demolished West Essex in the semis. Some strange results with big losses and wins in those morning foursomes, perhaps it was nerves on both sides? The afternoon singles started no better with Rochford standout Taylor Carter increasing Rochford's lead.
But the team who play as a team won the next four singles, the "Kids" turned things around to get into the driving seat. Cheered on by gathering support, it was getting to "squeaky bum time". With veteran Thornton Cupper Dave Tong calming the waters with another point from match 10 things looked more secure for boys in red. Paul King holding a one up lead playing the last used all of his experience and made an unbeatable birdie to hole the winning putt and the match. Celebrations began and ran well into the night.
Club Captain, John Charlick flew back from holiday especially for the match and had this to say.
"How could I miss the final? It will be the only chance I get to experience this as Club Captain, the team have lived up to that word, a team, with brilliant spirit and support whether they were selected or not. I have loved every moment of the matches and to win it is the icing on the cake. "
Team Captain, Steve Rooney, who also played spoke in the same voice
"What a team /squad they have all been. No one complained when dropped and all have wanted to be part of this all year. Some have had to wait until the semi-final to take their chance. To be the team Captain has been great, last year I could barely walk let alone play. It`s been an honour really. The match itself was played in Great Spirit, credit to Rochford, they are a good young side and will definitely be ones to watch next season again."
Cass is class
Cadet and Thornton Cup team member Cass Steffens won the Clubs Scratch match play Championship last weekend. Playing 4 matches over the weekend, he beat fellow Thornton Cup player, Don Vidgeon in the final 2 and 1.
Cass had recently been beaten to the Cadet Club Championship in his last year as a cadet by Cadet Captain, Alfie Buttle and was even more determined to make amends and get a trophy in his cabinet.
What with being part of the Thornton Cup winning side I think we can say he didn`t let that loss get in the way. Congrats Cass, a very satisfactory trophy to win.
Erin putts it to them...
Erin Wilson had a great time last weekend at Brampton Heath winning the US Kids 8-9 year old grand finale. Both she and Brother Sam (who finished 3rd in his age group) had recently competed in North Carolina, at the Pinehurst resort, in the World Championships over the summer holidays.
After playing there Erin felt she was in need of a new putter. So I fitted her for her new PING putter, got the length to suit and a head style that she had far more confidence in to line up with. After a couple of games it made a difference and hey presto she wins!
Could that be something your game is missing a suitable putter maybe?
Get in touch and let me help you gain more confidence and hole more putts just like Erin did.
Maintenance week is just about over.
Perry and the team have been hard at work preparing the greens and approaches to maintain the strength and health required to the grass for play, especially in the winter. Aeration and top dressing will allow both water and of course air to penetrate the soil giving back vital nutrients for survival and increased strength. With so much cutting and ironing over the year, the grass needs the support.
Don't worry though this short term inconvenience will be our long term gain through the winter and of course into next season.
Shop takes on a fresh look
The shop has now had a revamp and further autumn, winter clothing has been added for both ladies and gents. We have created a better flow around the store both visually and movement wise for you making it even easier to view and browse in your own time. With a deeper range of both Sunderland and ProQuip winter clothing and Autumn Oscar Jacobson plus Glenmuir products there is something for everyone's pocket. Take a look next time you`re passing, it has changed considerably.
Remember we insist on fitting you for your clubs before purchasing. Many still seem to purchase without getting this done! Even if it is to make sure everything spot on "for the person off the shelf" those invaluable 30 minutes it may take are essential. It`s not like you are buying a throw away item. These are going to be "friends" for quite some time. Get fitted and avoid reducing your enjoyment of the game.
