Orsett Ladies Silver team made history last weekend by winning the County Silver Shield for the first time ever! With Chelmsford in "the other corner" and favourites our ladies were up against it. Katy and Kay both losing the first of five matches in two last hole thrillers didn`t help the cause but as is required in any team sport all matches have their equal value. It all looked over for the ladies until Tina Arnold turned her match round from 2 down with 3 to play to a win another last green thriller. 2-1 with 2 matches out on the course, down in one and up in the other still wasn`t great. But with Karen determined to win her game, which she did, things now became very interesting.
As Captains do, Sue played at the tail, taking the place of Shirley who had unfortunately booked a holiday! As everyone came back down the fairway to see the conclusion of her match, Sue was walking past the tee without playing. Has she lost? Won? It was only when an Orsett supporter punched the air indicating victory that the celebrations could begin. Great delight from everyone Orsett! They had finally got their name and hands on the Silver team trophy and Lady Captain, Sue delivered the winning point. The game was extremely sporting and played in exactly the right spirit as well.
What a great way to remember your Captains year! Celebrations lasted well into the evening and why not? A great win ladies, can the men now emulate that in the Thornton Cup final in a couple of weeks' time, ironically at Chelmsford?
Chairman of the board
Club Chairman, Gordon Irving and partner last year's Club Captain, Graham Button literally brought the day to an end in John Charlicks, Captains Day. Played as a pair's betterball event throughout the day and with the wind increasing every hour, Gordon and Graham were the last but one group to leave the course. With great scoring off full handicaps coming in, it was amazing the late starters do so well. With 49 points leading for so long, Gordon amassed 47 on his own belying the way he has played much of the season, his words, not mine.
Graham's useful 2 holes got them in a tie for first but with a ridiculous back nine of 27 points they won overall. Runners up were George Carroll and Jim Connor, while in third was Fordies, Colin Hodges and his new "pairs" partner, Kevin Ryan on 48 points. The golf was followed by a huge BBQ, entertainment, prize giving and further entertainment until late into the evening.
A brilliant day and fun evening attended by so many of the players and their families.
Rory back on top.
Rory McIlroy finally won again after a 16 month absence from the winners table. The Irishman shot 65 in the final round of the 2nd leg of the Fed Ex Cup. He moves up 34 places into the top 4 all ready to shoot for the $10 million to the Fed Ex winner in a couple of weeks. More importantly, Darren Clarke's star turn has found his putting boots at just the right time. Runner up was Englishman, Paul Casey who did nothing wrong, he just got pushed aside by a very determined Rory. Let`s hope Rors can continue to putt well for another month, increasing his World ranking position and getting our Ryder Cup team competitive.
The World Cup qualifiers have started too!
England scraped a 1-0 win in Slovakia against 10 men in Sam Aladyces first match. The performance. Wasn't great but a wins a win in qualifying. Wales on the other hand continued their improvement. They cruised through 4-0, a perfect start after the Euros success. Scotland also won in Malta, being in the same group as England they will be looking forward to bringing the Tartan Army down to the bright lights in November.
Jose v Pep this weekend too, football is well and truly back on the radar.
The clothes they are a changing...
With the first drizzle for more than a month more of our autumn clothing has started to arrive. Some of ProQuip's excellent range has been delivered and is now available to purchase. Star buy has to be their Pro Flex rain suit, guaranteed for 3 years in blue or grey, this year's fashion colours or black if you prefer the lighter unlined version.
All jackets come with black trousers, so easy to match in. There is also a playing top with a 1/4 zip for those who prefer the quick on version.
All are a must try if you are in the market for a new rain suit. The cold weather clothing is due soon and if anything like last year will impress once again. ProQuip supplied the Ryder Cup team in 2014, what more of an advert could you need than that?
