"Mr DJ Mr DJ"…
Dustin Johnson finally put the monkey back in the cage last weekend even though the USGA tried hard to derail the entire event. Johnson was superior in all categories from the field Sunday even the "stay calm - I`m winning category". His opening Sunday tee shot of over 370 yards set the tone and as others, sadly capitulated along the way the American just sauntered along doing what he does best…play unbelievable golf.
It was a display of power and distance control that everyone has been witnessing for a while and while he has had some issues off course can anyone deny him this win? After the Whistling Straits bunker debacle, the skinned shank at St Georges OB (maybe not this one)and then the nerve crushing 3 whack at the Chambers of Horrors last year, DJ -as predicted was more than ready to scrape off the scar tissue and win a big one. Of course we all wanted Shane to maintain his lead and it will be hard for him to accept his last round demise probably over the first couple of Guinness's , but he will be a better player for it and will go on to contend many more times. You sometimes have to have the big loss to get it right next time. Look at Rory, Faldo, Norman, Tom Watson they all went through it before achieving.
Roooooney!
Our own Rooney, Steve Rooney played in the County Seniors Open for the first time last week and snuck in with a win by 3 shots. Played over the long Crondon Park course Steve nipped round in 153. A Thornton Cup stalwart now leads the Essex County team on an assault for South Eastern Counties title in July at Littlestone Golf Club.
Great win Steve, congratulations!
Orsett Thorton Cup delight…
Club Captain John Charlick was overwhelmed in his speech after the team pulled off one of those Medinah moments in their last round match away at The Rayleigh club last weekend. 4-1 down at lunch to a strong side, Orsett rallied to win 8-7. With Team Captain away ill, John had twice as much ground to cover but with the experience of recent Essex Senior Champion Steve Rooney to advise him he wasn`t alone with the decisions.
"It was thrilling all day. At one point we were staring 5-0 in the morning, then 2. 5 -2. 5. So we knew the afternoon singles would be good viewing if incredibly difficult. Yet the belief and team spirit was huge and the golf was some of the best I have ever witnessed from both teams.
I have to single a couple of shots out…16 year old Harry Robsons 190 yard 4 iron out of the bunker on the last over water to 10 foot at 1 up gave us the foothold for a result, knowing we would then make at least a play off and Don Vidgeon coming back from 2 down with 5 to play, being all square with 2 to play and getting the all-important half to seal victory in front of so many people, knowing what was on the line.
The team played like a team and support from player to player was enormous. I`m looking forward to the quarter final, which I hope will be of the same high standard but with fewer finger nails being chewed off"
Put a date in your diary's, July 17th, Orsett v Woolston Manor at Maylands CC.
Cadets maintain their momentum…
The cadet section maintained their grip on their league position at the weekend with a 4-1 win over Stockbrook Manor. 2 Matches went up the 19th but both came down in Orsetts favour.
Cadet Organiser Mark White was so pleased with the result. "Again we played well and got a good result. We are making a great fist of retaining our title so far, the team are doing a great job and competition for places is probably feeding that we are close to the knockout stage and one more win should do it"
Last spots remaining on Demo day…
July 4th is getting ever closer and then we are down to our last couple of demo fitting appointments. If you are wanting one of these appointments be quick as they will soon be gone. We have a little promotion running too.
