Competition news

Orsett teams shine in County events…

Orsett were involved in numerous Club matches over the weekend ,the ladies Bronze side held 2 of their league matches at home and had fine wins of 5-2 and a thrilling 4-3, against Frinton and Thorpe Hall respectively. 3 of the Thorpe matches went to extra holes, not what you want if you had played only 36 hours before! Team Captain, Christine Gordon was so pleased with her team's efforts, especially committing to the matches over the holiday weekend, and is now looking forward to the next round of matches in the coming weeks.

Our Thornton Cup team got off to a slow start but the "youth" in the side made sure it didn`t hinder progress into the 3rd round. Turning around a possible 1-4 lunch to 3-2, Orsett set about the blustery conditions and made quick work of the required points by the 6th match, allowing the rest to be called "halves" with the outcome in Orsetts favour.

"A win away is never easy, especially against good opposition like StockBrook Manor. We now have The Rayleigh Club away, one of the favourites so we`re looking forward to another tight game" declared Team Captain, Graham Button.

"We beat them at home last year so they will be wanting revenge no doubt. We need to be on top form again to win. We had great support from the members' for the first match and hopefully we can get even more down to Rayleigh. It always helps to see a friendly face at times"

The cadets also won again at the weekend against Burstead GC 4-1.

It was nearly a white wash, but Sophie Wheeler's opponent played a perfect chip to win on the last. Orsett Cadets are still undefeated and go into their 5th match  in a couple of weeks' time.

Well done to all the teams keep up the great play.

Tour news

Look who`s back …..

Jordan Spieth, that's who. The world No 2, short of any sort of real form since his collapse at Augusta, won in Texas at Colonial. He admitted that no one should go through what he went through in The Masters. Well Jordan, it`s what can happen in sport, you`re not bullet proof to it I`m afraid.

It has happened to many a great sports star, Arnold Palmer, Rory McIlroy, Greg Norman (more than once) Stuart Pearce, Gareth Southgate and so many more I could list. It is the roller coaster world of elite sport, where one slip and a career can be stopped in its tracks. How strong mentally that individual is will dictate whether they stay at the top or disappear into sporting oblivion.

Spieth has excellent people around him and this win will convince him he is "back in the game". With the US Open around the corner at Oakmont, a brute of a course, confidence will be essential come Sunday.

The big 3 are all playing well again but it could all be about Tiger, if he plays. It will be great to have him back on the course and will be interesting how his game is that week.

This week is the memorial event at Jack's place, Muirfield village, or should it be renamed "Jason's hangout" as he lives in the area and is a member. The Aussie will be the man to beat for Rory et al. It's all bubbling up nicely for a couple of weeks' time.

Master meets Master..

US Masters Champion Danny Willet met one of his heroes last week at Wentworth in the shape of one of our younger members, Sam Wilson just 6 years old, who had won the mini masters series at Wentworth's Par 3 course in April.

Not to be outdone in the interview stakes, Sam was spotted hitting balls on a simulator and interviewed by the BBC! Get used to it Sam you have a big career ahead of you.

Demo day

Mizuno demo day

Bit of a cooler blustery day for June 1st, but it didn`t stop all those booked in for their fitting appointments. Thankfully the rain held off and Tech Rep, Matt could put the members through their paces. If you were unfortunate enough to miss out on the day, no need to worry. I have all the required equipment to fit you. My DNA cart provides every head and shaft option Mizuno offer for irons and there is more than enough equipment for wood and hybrid fitting as well. So if you would like to be fitted for the Mizuno products get in touch the usual ways and let`s give you "that nothing feels like a Mizuno experience".

World of sport

National Euro squads named..

Home nations Euro 2016 squads were named this week. England were obviously the main talking point having chosen some less than fully fit players and picked so few defenders. The Manager likes what he likes and is supposedly allowing the players to play with no fear and with an attacking style. Well Roy, they will need some ideas and a definition of attacking football! If they play as they did against 10 man Portugal it could be the last tournament he presides over. With all due respect they were terrible at best until a few subs came on and the momentum changed and finally they scored for a win. I can`t see their opponents losing too much sleep if this is the no fear, attacking policy…

Time will tell for all home nations but especially for the England team and their manager.
