What's in the water at Orsett?

A couple of weeks ago I announced that Richie and his wife were having a child. It seems not to be outdone, my other assistant, Andy and his partner, Clare have announced the same thing!! Is it something both men have been eating and drinking at the Club or could it have been all the stress of Christmas shopping. So not too far away before they both learn what burning the candle at both ends really feels like when the sleep deprivation kicks in!

Congratulations to you both, you'll love it really love it.

Shop news

Mizuno have delivered their new iron heads for 2016 into my DNA fitting cart bag. All are available from February 16th and EVEN better news this season from the Japanese giant, all irons with graphite shafts will cost the same as steel. No steel haven't gone up, so well done Mizuno, very forward thinking and one up one the rest of the manufacturers.

The new heads are the JPX EZ irons are their easiest ever to launch with super-fast ball speed due to their dual pocket technology. Like most of their competitors, a slight strengthening to the lofts but this is to keep the flight down due to the lower centre of gravity. They come in a neat black nickel, anti-glare finish just like their forged cousin, the JPX EZ forged iron, built with infused boron steel and a power frame around the head to aid stability to those off centre hits we all suffer with at times. These would suit anyone and Mizuno have even stated they would be ideal for those professionals who prefer not to practice!

Course news

Which hemisphere are we in?

After last Sunday's snow, how about this weekend's spring temperatures of 14 degrees? Absurd to see people in the UK playing golf in January in T shirts!!And no they weren't short sleeve wind tops, my eyes aren't that bad yet. Not that anyone is complaining, far from it. Follow this up though with a bucket full of rain and wind since then and outside resembles the Fergie hair dryer treatment with a bit of spit thrown in. It adds up to the weirdest weather January has seen for some time. Can't wait to see what February brings.

Tour news

Rickie's so cool, especially with that footwear.

Desert invitee Rickie Fowler proved he can be in the mix this season and make that big three a bigger four. The American swept all aside in Abu Dhabi including World number one desert debutant Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy, to prove he is right there too. Mind you, great idea he had to wear high tops to play in. It meant no sand was ever going to get in his shoes was it!? What about his trousers? I'm surprised the tour allowed him to wear a pair of jogging bottoms to play in.

A relative newbie out there was monster hitter, Thomas Pieters, from Belgium. He finished runner up and with a swing to die for, he could be new blood the Ryder Cup team may need in September. We have been lead to believe Belgian chocolate is bad for you? If it means 330 yard drives I'm up for a few boxes this season and will start selling it in the shop too. Colsearts must be on it too as he isn't exactly short either is he?

It was Spieth's first go in the desert and with pure greens the Texan must have fancied it but with a cold putter he only managed a top ten, rubbish! Rory though had bigger woes on the greens but having not competed for nearly two months a top five was still tidy for the Ulsterman.

In America, Palm Springs, California (the perfect golfing location) Jason Dufner nearly gave away a win. The expressionless American with the thing of beauty for a swing chipped out of the rocks on the 17th in real time to save par and got up and down from that all important 100 yards on the first extra playoff hole and then watched as, Swede, David Lingmerth hit the rocks only to see his ball go back into the water on the next sudden death hole for the American to win. It was Dufner's first win since the 2013 PGA Championship. Since then he had seen the value of losing weight and getting rid of his Ronnie McDonald hair style. His swing has remained intact and augers well for the Ohio born player this year. He smiled all the way to the bank on Monday with his 7 figure check, that's for sure.

Coaching news

Going back to Dufner. If you agree that 100 yards and in is all important and you could make improvements in that area of your game, why not let me help you .This is the area I love to coach and can make a huge difference to your scores! It's the easiest to practice, quickest to change and above all the most satisfying too. If you include putting in their as well, there is no reason why I can`t help you improve your handicap in no time at all. Get in touch and let`s see your scores plummet.
