Captains news

John and Sue open their Captains year in fine style

Both Club Captain, John Charlick and Ladies section Captain, Sue Mason got their year off to great applause with 2 fabulous opening Ceremonial tee shots at the weekend. In front of over 150 members they both split the designated target with their drives and then took a well-earned glass of champagne to calm the adrenalin. This was followed by lunch and entertainment from Magician, David Redfearn who amazed everyone with his talent to produce cards from all sorts of places and even change currency in front of our eyes! Good luck to both of you (not that you will need it) Enjoy your year in office.

Club teams

Team success…

I recently played in the Essex PGA overseas Pro-Am in the Le Touquet area of France.

3 days of Pro-Ams with members of Orsett. Clive Petitt, Peter Reed and David Beasley and I took on the courses just an hour through the Tunnel into France. Le Touquet ,"Mer" a brutal course in the wind ,which has had some excellent renovations due to it hosting The French Open in 2018, (Paris has the Ryder Cup that year too), Belle Dune a lovely course 40 minutes south and Hardelot "Pines" for the final day.

The weather was everything from Sunshine, to showers to downright freezing, but we managed a highly creditable 4th place.

We probably won "laughs of the week" with some of the shots and stories though. Peter "Basil "Reed summed up the frustration of golf with his perfect re-enactment of Basil Faulty whipping his car with a branch episode on the 16th fairway 40 yards short of the green after 2 great shots the third only went 5 more. There was no time to get the evidence as the three of us watching were laughing so much! It was affliction that had come to us all somewhere that week but this was by far the best "effort" and should have been duly rewarded properly with an appropriate trophy. Great week fellas keep up the smiley faces.

Tour news

The European tour is coming to a close for the year and another big win for Andy Sullivan in Portugal. He must be looking to next seasons Ryder Cup dream in USA on his play this season. Meanwhile in America Rory was back playing in one of the first events on the 2015-16 wrap round season. Not his best week but he is gearing up for Dubai just around the corner and the European Tours final event at the end of November.

Meanwhile at the same event, another great result for Argentina as, Emiliano Grillo got a maiden Tour win beating Kevin Na in a 2 hole playoff. A great win for him especially as the home town boys were looking for early Ryder Cup points before the New Year. It opens up numerous doors, like the Masters for him now and given him added belief in his undoubted ability after blowing a win just 3 weeks ago by missing a short putt on the last.

If you need help to make more putts, I can help. It may not be your stroke, it could be your green reading or pre shot routine. Why not get in touch and have some help become the best putter you have ever been? Look forward to hearing from you soon.

And finally

Recently, I wrote about Sophie and Tracy becoming Orsett's first winners of the Hunter foursomes, well, I was wrong. Nearly 20 years ago Margaret Lister and Gemma Skase beat another Orsett pair which included Andrea Eustace in a final at Orsett! Ladies I can only apologise for this and hopefully sets the record straight.

World Cup woes for Home Nations….

All the home Countries have joined England to watch and not compete in the rugby World Cup. The Southern Hemisphere just had a little too much for the North and even though Wales had it to win, they lost due to a fabulous piece of skill from one of the tournaments best players ,Duane Vermeulen which broke Welsh hearts. Scotland meantime played their hearts out in another thriller only to be defeated by a referee's decision.

The semi-finals are now titanic battles between the Boks and All Blacks who just stepped up a gear to smash France out of sight by 50 points. The holders have no intention of relinquishing their trophy and what a game this weekend at Twickenham it will be. So many subplots, back rows, no 10s, speedy wingers and the benches which could decide it all. Surprise package Argentina dealt Ireland a lesson and without Legend Paul O`Connell and Sean O`Brien, The Pumas showed what a benefit it's been to play with the big Three. They now face fortunate Australia in Cardiff Sunday in another fantastic semi-final. Can anyone beat the Kiwis? They looked awesome and in their leader Richie McCaw, he is an International Rugby Legend who has brought skill, style and even our interest to what happens in the pack. The ultimate game changer.

If you’ve yet to check out the new Mizuno MP-5 and MP-25 irons, then make sure you do – they’re quite something. It’s all about Boron Crystal, according to Mizuno, and although “not very sexy” what it does, is. Want to learn more?
