Greetings from David Wood
Orsett Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

A record number of wins in the world's oldest cup competition, that's what happened Saturday for The Gooners when they retained the FA cup against "Tim Sherwood's mighty Villa" which wasn't difficult when Villa didn't even get a shot, header even a shinner on target the whole game.4-0 was probably a fair reflection as The Villa had no answer to the likes of Sanchez, Corsorla (as some commentators would have you believe), Ozil and Ramsey. A final with the biggest gulf in class since Man Utd jogged around against Millwall. As you can see the Villa fans enjoyed their day but could only marvel at the quality in the yellow shirts against them. Better luck next season boys, at least you can still call yourself a premier league side.

Meanwhile up in Scotland Motherwell put Rangers well and truly in their place. 6-1 on aggregate in the Premier League playoff match which ended in a better punch up curtesy of Beliel Moshni of ex Southend fame than Anthony Joshua's bout in the O2. So upset at losing he picked a fight with Motherwell players on the way off the pitch! What was he thinking? I'm out of contract, not got promotion I need to do something the fans will remember me for! I think he printed his boarding pass back to Tunisia.

Not to be out done by anything in the UK football world, can it get crazier than Sepp Blatter. The head of FIFA getting re-elected but just four days later he resigns? The FBI have been all over the alleged corruption within the football hierarchy. I suppose that means Blatts your lot Sepp, no more free lunches, first class chauffer driven travel and five star hotels, Ok maybe free lunches, police escorts and possible prison cells instead. Looking back over the last few days perhaps Blatt was the week blatts was. "it`s a funny old game Saint!"

Ladies continued success

The ladies Silver team continued their run of wins with a convincing 5-0 win against Earles Colne last week. In appalling weather conditions the ladies made light work of their opponents and are looking forward to their next match this coming week. Keep up the good work ladies.

Cadets keep winning,

A win is a win. That was the thought of Cadet Organiser, Mark White after his team snuck over the finish line in a thrilling 3/2 win at The Burstead last weekend. Two matches went to the 19th hole, one of those was Cassidy Steffens winning his match which got the team the required third point. They continue to collect points in case others slip up in their league! Well done boys.

Thornton Cup disappointment....

The Thornton cup team are building a good team bond. Unfortunately it couldn't be tested in the second round last Sunday as Gosfield Lake were unable to field a team, so the last 16 beckons with another home draw against the Rayleigh Club at the end of the month.

Save the date...

Wednesday, 17 June, 2pm-6pm make that 5pm as the 5 and 5.30 sessions are now filled. We are having Titleist come to Orsett for you to be fitted with their latest custom 915 products. Members who have already switched from their older 910 and even 913 models are glad they did. Straighter and definitely longer are words that have described the 915 metals and we all like the sound of those words fellow golfers!! So here is a great opportunity to see if those words ring true for you too. Get in touch via the Pro Shop and get booked in. Remember, the PING fitting sessions were gone in 10 days, if you snooze you may lose.

Soren seems to be the hardest word...

Probably used a lot by Rory to the Irish masses last week in Ireland. The locals came in their droves to watch their hero Rory McIlroy return to form after his PGA slip up, yet the Holywood superstar managed another blank. He looked embarrassed at his performance during the first round of 80, yes 80 when shots were out of control and his red hot putter must have spent the previous night up the road at the Bushmills distillery! Simply a disaster for the tournament host and National hero. A second round of 71 couldn't save him and along with many other stars of the links he sat the weekend out only to have to be around Sunday to present the trophy to the winner, which was meant to be himself. Still he had his new squeeze with him so I'm sure she got some extra Irish hospitality on Saturday.

As for the event, the course, Royal County Down, ranked number one in the UK and the tough weather conditions (similar to those you all endured each weekend recently) took its toll on the drama. It was exciting eventually as Soren Kjeldsen went and three whacked the 71st green to give everyone hope. He holed a smelly three footer to eventually get in the playoff after chipping across from one side of the green to the other and actually having a tougher second chip as well. His putt went in the side door just like his winning effort in the playoff when he tried to three putt from 25 feet with his opponents both suffering with nerves and short game difficulties. Not only did he win, it got Kjeldsen into the Open in six weeks at St Andrews.

Tom Watson and Nick Faldo will say fair well to the Open. Eight wins between the legends sees further chapters close on The Open history pages. If only Tom had got up and down at Turnberry in 2009 on the last he would have held the record of Open wins. Does anyone remember who won that year? Difficult isn`t it*. Watson was a great bad weather player and brilliant putter, perfect for those Open conditions at times. Will anyone forget the 1977 dual in the sun with Jack? Or his two iron to the last at Bridal to win in 1983? Faldo, the greatest British golfer of all time on record won three times including St Andrews in 1990. It was the Open that made him change his swing .He realised that he had could never win with what he had and the rest is history.

Both Dan Vaughan and Shaun Mills will be attempting to qualify for their Open in the next few weeks. Both are qualifying at The Wildernesses, one of Kent's finest inland courses. Good luck to them both.

Hopefully this weekend will be a warm, sunny affair. So enjoy yourself on the course and don't forget the sun cream!

*Stuart Cink for those that care.
