All change at Orsett….
“This weekend has come around all too quickly”, that was the thought of outgoing Club Captain, David Turner. “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time at the helm and I hope Graham enjoys it just the same”
Both Captain David and Captain of the Ladies section Margaret Oliver handed over the reins of office to their Vices, Graham and Ali.
The day got under way with a champagne breakfast beside the sound of rain bouncing off the patio for the past, present and future Captains, ladies and gents as well as myself and assistant Richie who made up both the breakfast table and fourballs on the course. Thankfully the rain stopped before play started just the Captain said it would. Tradition is the outgoing Captains play with the Professional staff against incoming and vice in probably the most competitive game of the season that has, so far, been halved both times I`ve played.
With the gathering of members the “gladiators” stepped onto the teeing area to officially Drive in. Of course the traditions of guessing the driving distance of both tee shots are followed, some long, some wide and some on the end of the teeing area!
In front of a healthy number of members and guests Ali made a good connection but hit a tree reducing her drive by at least 60 yards. Nerves played no part (apparently, just alignment)
Graham had driven the ball beautifully during the round needed just one more and didn`t disappoint either. But for another tree which stopped it dead, his effort of 251 yards would also have been much further.
Relieved to have “got that out of the way" the Captains and 100 other people disappeared into the Clubhouse for the Drive in lunch, Champagne and entertainment kindly set up by Billy “show biz” Malpas. Andy sang, ran out numerous impressions and then got completely into Elvis mode with a twist on some of the lyrics. Audience participation grew with what can only be described as a unique rendition of a George Michael song from Tina Gregory (with Andy on backing) how unique? Even Billy couldn`t improve it too terrible with his DJ decks at full force! With both Tina back in her box and Andy completing his moves Billy played on long into the evening for even more entertainment.
A great day, excellent lunch, world class entertainment and plenty of sore heads on Monday. A true Orsett extravaganza.
Thanks all those who have already got in early to order their personalised balls, a great Christmas gift that any golfer would like to receive (sure as hell beats the soap on a rope someone got last year).
For other great ideas take a look in, there is something for everyone, from logo clothing to GPS units. Not only can you look good on the course, you can navigate the fairways more safely with a GPS product. From wearing it on a wrist or using the laser guides anything that makes this fascinating game easier must be worthy of some thought. We carry all Golf Buddy products and much of the Bushnell range. Pop in and let me help you decide which would suit your needs best.
For those “getting away from it all” we will be carrying some 6 inch stand bags for you. They can easily carry 10 clubs, ideal for the overseas trip or even walking the course at home. More ideas will be passing through in the coming weeks. Try to avoid leaving it until last minute to ask as you may be disappointed. December 26th is too late people! Even Santa doesn`t deliver then.
Keep an eye out on the Club calendar for all the festive and Captains functions. I`m sure Tina won`t be singing at all of them so don`t miss out on these either!
Ilonen winning ‘em
I get the feeling that many were surprised to see Mikko Ilonen stealing the show at the Volvo Matchplay at the London club. However, we don’t think you should have been. He is a past British Amateur champion so clearly has the magic for matchplay. Despite losing his first round match the underrated Mikko snuck under the radar with impeccable performances not only in the final against, arguably the joint favourite at the start of the tournament Henrik ‘fedex’ Stenson, but throughout after a difficult opening day. A bogey free round and 4 birdies took the world number 52 to his biggest career win and to do it against the odds and the world number 5 would have made it even more special for the up and coming Fin. Also we must mention the scalp of the other ‘favourite’ G-mac. Mikko inflicted only his 3rd defeat in this matchplay event and started the ball rolling towards the trophy. Mikko’s matchplay magic will now mean he is one to watch on the tour and we think you should. The unassuming Fin is steadily rising to prominence on the tour and will be gunning for Minnesota 2016.
Also just a quick mention to my staff member who managed to clear the gallery on the first tee at the London Club….
Thanks for the emails, texts and verbal messages regarding the Welsh football team, some aren`t repeatable. I put my head over the parapet and many think I may have spoken too soon. Not that I`m biased but we have a great chance of European glory this time….not winning but qualifying! Welsh football is full of hope, opportunity and another Gareth. The first one wasn`t too bad at rugby either.
