Frankie goes to Moliwood… What a great weekend of golf from France. From the golf played, to the amazing stands, player interaction and crowd participation. The Ryder Cup did not disappoint, I`m sure everyone watched one of the best sporting spectacles ever. Thomas Bjorn`s European team were just sublime in their gradual demolition of Americas "superstar" team. USA Captain, Jim Furyk, was gracious in defeat stating "they outplayed us all week, congratulations to Europe, they were the better team". Yes the result says it was one hell of a beating at 17.5 -10.5 but the Friday four balls were saying something else (1-3) and it looked like the beating was going to come from America. Europe rode it out, broke records, kept the ball on the fairway (I`m glad Paul McGinley pointed that out more than once) from the tee and enjoyed The Americans giving holes away all week.

Personally their preparation was lacking, it didn`t help to have the Tour Championship the previous five weeks. Perhaps Phil Mickelson playing his what will probably be his last match can voice further changes to the schedule as it can surely only be a matter of time before he wears the Captain’s armband and help give USA a better chance away from their shores. Only Justin Thomas had played the course under competition conditions, two practice rounds, jet lag and lots of media/evening events takes its toll. It is the same every time and probably why the modern teams have not won in Europe for 25 years. |
Just how good were Europe? With such depth to the team, Bjorn could stick to his plan, resting certain players, keeping them fresh and protecting injuries. It may have made the difference come the singles on Sunday when it would matter most. In the event there are always heroes and The Open Champion Frankie Molinari was certainly one of them, another was Rookie sensation Tommy Fleetwood, he took to the event and embraced the crowds as though he had many times before. The course itself was superb, the master plan of tight fairways and crowds further away from the play were genius. The rough was horrific and USA didn`t seem to change strategy. As always that team mentality shone through with Europe, America talked about it enough but they just haven`t got it in the same way. Many of these Europeans have played team golf all their lives, with a foursome or four ball partner, America just don`t do it. Anyway, I’m sure Team USA will be ready for Europe at Whistling Straits in two years’ time, the place with more sand than your favourite seaside resort. In the meantime, enjoy the rest Thomas, I`m sure that was one heck of a party Sunday night! Europe no longer relies on just 5 players as in the past. The Captain has strength and depth, I just wonder if the selection rules will change once Brexit kicks in next year? It might seem strange to be an All British team playing in Rome at the next "home" match?

Would you like help from the bunker? A mention of sand and many of you will have a cold shudder down your back. Playing bunker shots are not difficult, I hear the same sort of excuses for a bad shot most weeks including "the bunkers are terrible", "there is no sand in them”, “too much sand in them", "it`s alright for you, you’re a good player" and "I get out sometimes". Well lets set things right... perhaps you need some advice to become a good bunker player. I have spent many an hour practicing and experimenting in bunkers and they hold no fear. Here`s some ideas to help you improve: 1. Get a decent sand iron to use from the green side bunkers 2. Understand how the set up influences the club characteristics 3. Hold the club lightly 4. Treat it like your driver, take a swing at it! 5. Get the ball out first time, aiming at the flag may not be the answer 6. Practice! Of course come and book a lesson, I will guarantee improvement from the sand no matter what handicap you maybe. There is always room to get better! Contact me here for a bunker lesson.

Layer up this winter! As I mentioned recently, the shop is undertaking somewhat of a transformation for autumn. The sale rail is still available for the last few items of summer wear and the shop has been revamped ready for the cooler, possibly wetter days ahead. It`s all about layering these days, to help maintain fluid movement when swinging. Gone are the days of clumpy thick garments, they do not allow you to play your best, so pop in and take a look for yourself.

Have you seen these prices? If you don't already own a Distance Measuring Device then you really are making this game a lot harder for yourself. Not only do they provide accurate distances to the front, middle and back of every green, but they can also double up as a lifestyle watch, too. Until Sunday, we are discounting Garmin's S10 watch by £20 and its S60 watch by £50, so act fast if you wish to take advantage! |

Sunningdale....A place of absolute beauty! It truly is one of golf’s inland Meccas and last week I took 32 golfers to play the famous courses, The Old and The New. Set in the heart of Berkshire, these two fabulous courses must not be missed off the golfing bucket list. To a person, whether they played god or not so good, everyone had a fantastic time. As you can see from the photos, how couldn`t anyone enjoy this place? Not to mention the food!

To sleeve or not to sleeve |
Being underprepared when you're out on the course is a blunder which we've all been guilty of making. As the cold weather starts rolling in, you need to start thinking about some layering pieces that keep you warm and dry, but also lets you have freedom of movement during your round. Luckily for you, we have just the answer. |
Glenmuir Munro Zip Neck sweater Glenmuir has given you a perfect solution in the form of its Munro Zip Neck sweater. The cashmere-cotton combination makes it a great choice for those of you looking for a soft and warm jumper when you're out on the course. Plus, its lightweight fabric enhances your freedom of movement with minimal restriction, making this the perfect golfing mid-layer. |

Glenmuir Thurso Padded gilet
If you prefer the sleeveless approach, why not try this sleeveless gilet? Made from a stretch fabric, it not only helps you swing the club easily despite the extra layer, but also allows for a superior fit. It comes in a choice of three stunning colourways, and is flexible enough for you to wear a pullover underneath on the chilliest of days. |
