We dared to dream England did the nation proud, a really desperately disappointing defeat after dominating the first half and not taking those chances saw England go out of the World Cup when it looked like the final was in their grasp. The team did so well and there is no point criticising this defeat, but will they get a better chance of making it to the final? Well done Gareth Southgate and his squad it gave the whole of the UK something to enjoy. So many events happening in the UK this month, outside of the world of sport, Donald Trump is coming to the UK (hopefully to explain himself) and Brexit, well... what a fiasco, so many of the Cabinet have resigned, what’s really being proposed in the white papers we hear so much about? In the sporting arenas we have recently witnessed the World Cup, British Grand Prix, Wimbledon, cricket against India and next week the event we've all been waiting for, The Open.
Scotsman, Russell Knox has hit form at just the right time with a fabulous win in spectacular Donegal to take the Irish Open in a playoff from Ryan Fox. A top 10 the week before in Italy must indicate to The Ryder Cup team Captain that he is a serious team contender this time, having just missed out in 2016. With everything that seems to be happening in British sport, could a Brit win The Open again or even a Scotsman? Remember who won there the last two times? A certain Paul Lawrie and Padraig Harrington took the claret jug home. Who will ever forget that last hole calamity for Jean Van der Velde and Harrington in a playoff with Sergio Garcia for his first of three majors in 12 months.
It will no doubt be a fabulous event and with so many players in with a chance it could be the best ever. If Carnoustie shows it's teeth we may well be celebrating more British success.
