The PGA Tour Bubba Watson showed the world that robotic golf doesn’t have to be the way to play. The American won the Genesis Open at Riviera Country Club for third time equalling the great Ben Hogan and Lloyd Mangrum’s records there, although Mr Hogan did count one of his US Open titles. Bubba, the PGA Tour maverick, in that he plays his own way. Often in left field sometimes out right. When on song, his style of play is a breath of fresh air and certainly makes watching golf a whole lot better. Other than Tiger, Rory and Phil who else would you want to really go and watch? The mercurial Bubba with his "natural" swing, extraordinary amount of curve on the ball and quirky personality makes for one superb golfer. Riviera needs a shot maker to win and Bubba has the imagination to impart the shots. The shot tracer is great watching how he both spins and flights the ball compared to the field. No flag is hidden when he is on his game.
Who will ever forget the 50 yard hook with a wedge on the first playoff hole at Augusta from out of the trees? The course allows all sorts of player style to compete, from the longest like Bubba and Tony Finau, a classy swinger like Patrick Cantlay, shorter hitters like Graeme McDowell and the drudge called Kevin Na. It`s an "old fashioned" course that needs shot shape and distance control to challenge. But 1 minute and 30 seconds for a 2 foot putt is ridiculous by Na on the last round .It wasn`t too long ago Na had golf freeze and got stuck over the ball, he actually stopped playing. Only a couple of weeks ago JB Holmes took 4 minutes and 30 seconds to decide on his shot. Ok these decisions are not for a pound yet the rules are in place to stop these players killing the game. Was anything done about it? No, The PGA Tour officials have just swept it under the mat. Only if the rules officials crack down on it no matter who it is or when in the event, the first nine or the last shot, will it change? It makes for terrible watching and gives the game a bad name. More players like Bubba and Phil please PGA Tour.
