Monthly medal

Sunday played host to Orsett’s monthly medal but more significantly recognised the first anniversary of SClub 46 "leader", Howard Smiths passing. The date was marked with SClub group playing for a memorial trophy alongside the club event which Howard's wife Tina would present to the winner.

The inaugural winner was Finn Cotter, a regular participant of the group. Finn, not always the most consistent scorer but among the most enthusiastic for the game, scored a nett 66 which included a nine (see what I mean?), beat the field by just two strokes from back on form Neil Gale who shot a 72 nett 68 off 4. Having been presented with the trophy, Finn was both humbled and delighted to be the first name on the trophy. Well played Finn not only did you win Irelands only "medal" of the weekend but the lessons are still paying off.

Justin the knick of time

US starlet Justin Thomas emulated his great friend Jordan Spieth by winning the last major of the year at Quail Hollow. The event was seen as Rory's opportunity to get back on the winners rostrum, Jordan's chance to complete his grand slam or Hideki’s chance of Japanese legendary status. Matsuyama had the lead in the final round at times as did five other players but it was Thomas who held his nerve, made the decisive putts and won his first major trophy.

Thomas is only 10 stone dripping wet but like many of today's players absolutely rips it off the tee. Remember his faded 3 metal on the last from 299 in this year’s US Open?

He stepped up on Sunday and got the job completed. This was his fourth win of the season, he opened with two wins in Hawaii in January including a 59! Thomas joins the band of single major winners but he has all the credentials when he putts well to win the biggest events of all. For those that thought to back him, well done you.

The US Tour now looks toward the Fed Ex Cup, but I see some worrying clouds on the horizon. So many of the top players seem to be carrying more injuries than ever before. Rory is the latest to admit he may take the rest of the year off to rest his broken body. Jason Day has a suspect back, DJ still hasn't truly recovered and don't forget Mr Woods, yes him! Injury now plagues them all. Suzann Pettersen only this week withdrew from the Solheim Cup team. That's only mentioning the high profile players. This never used to happen so frequently but nor did the quest to hit the ball regularly over 300 yards to keep up these days. The players may need to reconsider training regimes, the master fitness fanatic Gary Player never suffered as they seem to and in his 80s he's still fighting fit. If they are not careful their careers could be cut short. If you do intend to train for golf fitness, get good sound advice from someone who knows what they are doing.
