Thorton Cup
Orsett look to seek a little "revenge" in the quarter finals of the Thornton Cup after being drawn against Boyce Hill. A couple of seasons ago Boyce knocked out an inexperienced team at the same stage, so this looks like being a HUGE tie. Getting to the quarter final last weekend was none too easy as a 3- 2 lead at lunch was not what the holders were looking for. However the top of the order did their job and took the first five games 8-2 reducing the last five matches to deciding among themselves their outcome. 10.5-4.5 was strong win in difficult blustery, dry running conditions against Stoke by Nayland.
In the end a very competent win showing the strength in depth of the squad as once again team Captain, Steve Rooney had to juggle the team. He did have however this time his Collegiate stand out Zach Chegwidden and "The Cat" Mark Whiten to call on. Put it in your diary, Sunday July 16th, Muswell Hill GC for a titanic battle and I believe who ever does win may well be hoisting the trophy aloft in September.
Below is the quart final draw:
Orsett v Boyce Hill
Bentley v Thorndon Park
Chelmsford v Braintree
Muswell Hill v Basildon
In case you were wondering how does Muswell Hill G C get to play in this event when they are located in Middlesex, the origins of the event were determined around railway links at the time. There are other out of Essex teams that play too such as Bishops Stortford, Enfield and East Herts but this year it will be a true Essex Club that will be crowned Champions.
Welcome Conor
New recruit in the shop.. Some of you will have welcomed our latest recruit by now, Conor Slough to the Club. He has joined us recently after completing his A levels and has decided he wants to start his PGA training as soon as possible. Conor loves all sports but golf got to him like many of us. A keen footballer, cricketer and athlete something had to give. He has been around the shop a few days already getting used to the "Orsett way" of doing things and enjoying the banter first hand as well. Please pop in and introduce yourself to Conor, I'm sure he will be only too happy to get out and learn the course alongside any of you straight away.
Father's Day
With Father's Day this weekend, perhaps it's the perfect opportunity to get loved ones to purchase those lessons you have been putting off. It`s got to better than another pack of socks and aftershave hasn`t it? Perhaps you have had an eye on some new shirts. Let them know this the place to shop.
Fitting Days
There are still a couple of appointments left for this Friday's Mizuno fitting day. Get in touch here if you can come along and try some of the best feeling clubs in the game.
If not then perhaps our Titleist fitting day on Monday June 26th may be more to your liking ?
With the AP1 and 2 irons ,award winning 917 metal woods and of course the SM6 Vokey wedge system to choose from it could be perfect. Just get in touch the usual way to book a fitting slot from 2.00pm and let Titleist do the rest.
US Open Surprise
Phil Mickleson is almost certain to miss this year's event after putting family first as his eldest daughter graduates on the opening day. Lefty needs a four hour rain delay to make his 2.12 tee time, so as much chance as Theresa May has of remaining Prime minister come September. Or is he just using it as an excuse to not play on another of those untried strange new courses that the USGA seem to want to use for the Open more often? So it looks like he could be waiting another year to try and make the coveted grand slam of majors happen. Runner up 6 times in the event where his wizards short game has got him so close but reckless decisions from the tee have cost him dear.
Will Erin Hills be a "favourites" place or can someone shoot out the pack to win? It's unusual as it has fescue grass on it allowing for the fast fairways we see at the seaside in the UK, yet rain is due some of the week.
I said I would offer some ideas for challenging this week. How do the names Sergio, Bubba, Shane and Lucas Glover sound away from the top four? Sergio has the qualities now and as this event is not always about putting the Spaniard could amaze us all and double up. Bubba has shown a little more form recently and his shot making could be significant. Lowry has the pedigree and a magic wedge game. Runner up last year to DJ round a brutal course this could be his time. Glover has won a US Open before around slog fest at Beth Page. Errin Hills is a place no one has played and his immaculate iron play could make him a feature.
The course looks sort of linksy, has lots of run offs and quirky little areas in bunkers. If it does play hard and fast and how the USGA want it, it could be pretty entertaining .If its super soft, well put your money on the bombers in the field.

No limits to Jacks game
Jack Jordan eclipsed the field in last weekend's club event. Open to 13 handicaps and above he won the Limit cup with a score of 3 up under bogey scoring. The amazing thing was he only had 3 halves! 6 losses and 9 plusses and those3 halves gave him a 3 hole winning margin. Pretty crazy golf? After this weekend's Open we might have seen a whole lot more crazy shots.
Enjoy all the golf this weekend, Happy Father's Day.
