Rules Night

Orsett's NEW look rules night is just around the corner on Wednesday, 8 February, starting at 7.30pm. Why not come along and enjoy a night at the club with your fellow golfing pals and make sure they aren't getting one over on you with their questionable rule offerings. It's not about being an anal golfing know it all, just understanding how the rules can help you as well as protect the decisions you may need to make on the course. Pop in the shop or call to let us know you are going to attend. If you want to make a little more of the evening, get to the club for 6.00pm and have something to eat before the event. It's only £5.00 to have a choice of a curry or lasagna. The event is FREE is you wish just to attend the night with no food.

Success story

John - Rahm's it to them at Torrey Pines

This time last year, Spaniard, Jon Rahm was graduating from his US College and starting out on his Rookie season as a Professional player. He made an immediate impression with both his power and "Spanish hands" which was getting the "Commentators in the Tower" to say "when, not if, he will win". Well it didn't quite manifest itself last year but the Spaniard, one of the new young breed of players who look to overpower courses and take them to pieces broke through in California.

During the last round, Rahm was one of nine players within a shot of the lead on the back nine, but an incredible Birdie, Eagle finish where he powered his second just off the back edge of the South courses Par 5, 18th green only to trundle the ball 60 feet down the slope, defy the laws of physics by making the ball turn opposite to everyone else's 12 inches from the hole and fall in, to put daylight between him and the field that eventually no one could cover. His celebration on holing out reminded me of a certain Tiger Woods at the 2008 US Open when he holed out across the slope from 20 feet to make the playoff and ultimately go on and defeat Rocco Mediate the next day.

The Spaniard played like a veteran down the stretch and will be in Thomas Bjorn's thinking for France next year already. What was also surprising was how many of the Superstars floundered. World No One Jason Day, World No Three, Dustin Johnson, Rickie Fowler and seven times event winner Tiger woods all took the weekend off. Only local boy Phil Mickleson showed any form. Mickleson has recently taken Rahm under his wing, playing a lot of golf with him this winter. Perhaps that's due to Phils brother being Rahms manager, mentor or go to person. If  he learns anything from Phil, it might be how to gamble on the course. Phil may have just found his new fourball partner. Many move onto Phoenix for the Tours fun stop of the year, where more people attend a golfing event than any other in the world. The famous par 3, 16th stadium hole that can bring a player to his knees is the star viewing point. Watch it if you can, the beer is flowing, the heckling is loud God help the player if he misses the green.

Tiger Woods in the meantime has taken an invite to the final part of the Desert Swing in Dubai. He has a great record there too (where doesn't he?). The great man is looking to improve on last weeks Torrey Pines downer. No doubt he is the box office draw, but looked a long way off winning.

World of sport

Yet one of the biggest sporting spectacles is also happening on Sunday. The Superbowl between New England and Atlanta will be a points fest. Two of the heaviest scores in the NFL, the "Pats" are probably just favourite to win. Being held in Huston the weather won`t play any part in the outcome as it's an indoor arena. The razzmatazz that goes with it, commercial deals and money spent per minute will be colossal. Here's a few interesting facts:

  • New England have played Atlanta 13 times and are 7-6 ahead.
  • The average ticket price is $4,500.
  • 1.23 billion chicken wings will get eaten.
  • 51 million cases of lager will be bought.
  • 1.5 million people will be taking a sicky on the Monday afterwards.

Just hope that Donald Trump doesn`t want one of his children to sing the National Anthem before the game. Trump has been in office a fortnight and has already managed to alienate himself to so many people around the world with his policies. He is going to keep the front pages full for many months to come, know doubt about it. Is that clever or foolish?. How about this for an acronym of his name... Definitely Resolving To Really Upset Many People.

Shop news

What can you come up with?

This weekend sees the launch of the new PING I200 irons, the first sets are already rolling off the shelf. Sets are already being sent out this week for members, more on that next week. Remember we fit you FREE when purchasing from us, so avoid delay and start bedding those clubs in ready for the new season. Please click here to book your fitting.

The last few boxes of Pro V1s at £72.00 per double dozen are still available. We will be shortly offering the NEW 2017 Pro V1 version alongside it. I`ve been testing both balls and they do exactly what it says on the box. If you require more spin the Pro V1 will fly lower with longer clubs and if its higher launch required, then the Pro V1 X is for you. They both still have the drop and stop and consistent spin for that all important short game. Personally, the thing to do is buy a sleeve of both and decide whats best for your game.

Enjoy the sport this weekend, more importantly enjoy your golf. See you around.
