The Masters

Sheffield Steel Dims The Holywood Lone Stars

Master's ChampionOh Danny Boy, the course, the Augusta course is calling,

From tee to green and down the fairways wide.

Sundays front nine done and the breezes dying,

`tis you, who must get that putter onside.

With Jordan making bogies,

Danny Willett
And then Westy chipping in,

The time has come to put down your numbers

and really rub it in.

And so The Masters closes,

With Jordan wondering why?

He dunked it in the water

And handed you, the Jacket, Danny Boy.

Another great Masters event with every emotion you could think of. Right from the Par 3 event Wednesday and a record score of 19 by Jimmy Walker and 9 Holes in one, including 80 year old Gary Player, the tournament was billed as "The new Big 3" taking starring roles. But once again it was the course that stole the spotlight and, with the breeze playing havoc on the first 3 days, it looked like Augusta was going to win again. Fortunately the golf got going Sunday, sadly without Rory, who had putting woes, and Jason Day, who just couldn`t get round the back nine.

So Sunday was going to be Spieth's next record day. Except no one could have ever imagined Amen Corner claiming him as its next victim. His 4 birdies to close out the front nine gave the title holder an unassailable lead, but errant drives, he had been fighting all week, cost him dear at 10 and 11, followed by 2 visits to Raes creek on the 12th. He fought back as all Champions do, but the game was up on the pivotal 17th. Willett, having played perfectly all day, made just about the best up and down on the 17th, bearing in mind most were 3 putting from the same direction, and Spieth came up short in the front trap. There was no return and Danny became the Masters Champion. Sadly others slipped back. Rory admitted he let others influence his game, Westwood had his chance and seems never destined, as Willets birdie on 16 defused his charge. Dustin, if he could putt half as good as some, how many could he have by now?

Was there anything more noticeable in the award ceremony when Spieth didn't shake Danny's hand on passing over the Jacket? He must have been shell shocked, but will no doubt come back stronger in June.

What a fortnight for the Yorkshire man, Dan breaks his duck in the Majors and has his first child, can't get any better for him can it?

Masters Sweep Winners

Plenty of sweep winners this year as we ran two sweeps! Bhadresh Swami and Jamie Lee picked out Danny Willett in the draws. Looking good, Bhadresh, in our winners green jacket!

All sweep winners are on the notice board, in the clubhouse, or in the Pro shop and moeny is on your accounts.

Competition news

A Perfect Weekend For Danny...

Will Perceival and Zach ChegwiddenDanny Vaughan got the elusive monkey off his back with his first County title finally. Having been runner-up twice recently, he won the coveted Threadgill Trophy at Orsett last Friday with a 36 hole total of four under par. "Vaughany" held a slight lead at lunch with his 69 and did enough to win by 2 at close. Third was up and coming Will Percival (pictured ) with Zach Chegwidden, after representing Essex Colts last weekend as well! He shot level par and finished 2 shots in front of Mark Whitten in 4th. So a good day for home players on a long course, with greens stimping around 11 at times. Congratulations to all, especially Dan and the green staff for a fabulous course. Everyone who played loved it and will most certainly be back

Team Woes As Seniors Bow Out…

Orsett seniors couldn't buck the recent trend and went out in the County Seniors championship at Cannons Brook last week. Having to give numerous shots they went down, 9. 5 -3. 5. Captain Bob Smith was really frustrated:

"I thought we had a team to cause a lot of problems this season, but unfortunately the problems were ours. Well done to them, home advantage is just that, an advantage. "

It puts things into perspective anyway with the loss of the match, as when I got home my wife slipped and broke her femur that day. We wish her a speedy recovery.

Mind The Gap...

Having watched this weekend it was amazing how good all the Professionals are with their wedge distances. The only time Spieth got it wrong was on the 12th. When interviewed he admitted he didn`t know the yardage. It goes to show just how important your wedge distances are and being clear in your mind what is trying to be achieved.

So is it time to get gapped correctly on the GC 2 monitor? If you think you need this or any short game help get in touch, by clicking here, and let`s help you avoid what Jordan did. It could cost you something valuable too.
